I bought this laptop as an upgrade a couple of years ago and have been very happy with my buy. It cost £479
from argos when I bought it the price will not doubt have plummeted by now I think it was a fantasic price never had a single problem with breakdowns nor have a came across anything it cant do granted im not a hardcore computer expert/user but I have used it for various things gaming , writing documents and streaming films all of which have worked just fine.
The laptop came with windows 7 premium which is still used everywhere though I understand windows are bringing a new vewrsion out soon. The hard drive is 320G which has been more than enough for me I cant say I have ever filled it but I do delete things every now and then . It comes with duel core processor which is 2.2GHZ and 3G ram I not totally sure what these are but when shopping for a laptop I read many many reveiws these were things that people were really raving about when talking about the Samsung R530.
The laptop looks awesome dark red on the outside silver on the inside it looks very different from other laptops but in a good way its also quit light which isnt a big thing for me but is helpful I suppose .
Overall I would recommend this laptop it has more than given back the money I paid for it mabye its starting to get a bit dated now so I expect to get another year out of it while waiting for the new windows to get cheaper I will however be looking out for newer versions of the R530 when upgrading it has been everywhere with me travelling india ,round the house and up and down the country its never let me don yet
hope this was helpful
Ever since the laptop trend started and we said goodbye to our old computer, the Samsung R530 is our second laptop after our Sony Vaio which served us a good year or two and then we started experiencing problems.
I've had the Samsung R530 for almost 2 years now and it's got everything I could ask for! If you're away at university or on holiday it's built in high quality webcam is perfect for skype chats. It runs on Windows 7 which to be honest is SLICK!
Apart from the technical jazz, like its 15.6" lovely widescreen & LED backlight it has a gorgeous lush fashionable look which we weren't really asking for, so it was a bonus that it can which such a durable rich deep maroon/red shell case design!
The battery life is pretty good, I can say it lasts a few hours at the library without me having to make my way to a table with a plug socket (I am lazy). The hard drive has plenty of space unless for a normal user (I have loads of lectures as powerpoints, documents, photos, musics, films - no worries!)
The touchpad is a godsend because you dont need to hold onto the scroll bar and drag it down like on some of the older laptops, you can just use the side of the touchpad -its so sensitive you can even use it to make the page you're viewing bigger or small and rotate images.
It has a HDMI port so you can hook your laptop up with the TV can get HD quality video streaming onto the television without any quality being lost- this is true for images as well.
This laptop has not let me down (yet- touchwood) I am a heavy user and use it at least a few hours everyday and use it plugged in unless I'm being lazy. One thing that wasn't included in the price was the Microsoft Office package which I think you have to buy with most laptops anyway! I usually take this around with me when I travel, it's not too bulky-fits into most laptop bags (don't do this-but i've accidently dropped it a few times too and it's still going!!)
In a nutshell, good value laptop that does the job in style! x
I bought this laptop for my daughter as an emergency purchase as her existing decided to die a week before she was due to start GCSE coursework. I am all for a simple life and a teenager without a laptop is far too stressful to live with!! Anyway, to be honest I purchase it based on price - it was reduced from £569 to £349 so I thought it was a good bargain.
This laptop has turned out to be great value for money - it came with Windows 7 which is ewasy to use, it is fast and has a good size screen. The lid is an attractive dark red design - it looks quite classy. The battery life is a good 2/3 hours. I particularly like the number keypad built in which is great if you use the number keys a lot (I use it for excel spreadsheets).
Overall I would recommend this laptop for anyone who wants a simple laptop for browsing the net, downloading music etc. I do not know what it would be like for gaming as it is not used for that.
I purchased this laptop in September just before the start of the new University year. I was pleased with the price, I paid just over £400.00 for it. It had been about three years since having a new laptop and I am amazed at how far technology and style has come on. The screen is very bright and perfectly clear which prevents strain with prolonged usage. The keyboard also has a Number pad which is great considering the screen is 15inchs. The case is silver to look like brushed aluminium but I guess Samsung couldn't squeeze this into a £400 laptop.
Moving away from the looks the battery has a clever feature where you assess the remaining life in percentages without turning the laptop on. The webcam is also very useful and makes stand-alone webcams redundant. Another brilliant feature is the HDMI port, which is great for connecting to a TV to watch high definition home videos or movies.
With a previous Acer laptop I bought there was a huge amount of software provided that took over many windows tasks such as battery and WLAN management. This is quite pointless and clutters up the operating system with software that is hard to remove. Luckily, this laptop has none of the pointless manufacturers software and this means it is universal and simple to use.
The battery lasts for up to two and a half hours depending on what the laptop is being used for. This is only when 80% charged however as there is a feature that if selected only charges the battery to 80% to prolong its life. I keep this feature switched on but if turnd off the day to day life would be even longer.
Windows 7 is a great operating system with many improved features from Windows Vista. I won't say much more than this as there are individual reviews covering this in more detail.
I fully recommend this laptop and am so impressed with it I convinced my brother to buy one too. It is great value for money and performs as a £500-£600 laptop would. Remember with some high street retailers around Christmas time it may be possible to negotiate a free laptop bag/anti virus software too!
Now I'm not the most clued up on laptops even though I did a course on them for 2 years at school ...ops! So im afraid my review will only be about the performance and looks of this laptop!
I'd had a pretty average laptop until I got this one brought for me one Christmas. It has plenty of memory which is great for me as I have a lot of photographs and music that needed to be transferred over, and I still have plenty of memory left which is a plus side.
It is very easy to use and extremely quick to get started up and running. It already comes with Windows 7 pre-installed which is great. It is a very powerful laptop in my opinion and is very quick, I don't have the quickest broadband but the internet still runs very quickly on this. At first I was worried the battery would drain very quickly but the battery life is surprisingly good! It also has a Samsung Recovery Center specifically for this laptop which is handy when I've clicked things that I'm not really sure what they were! I'd say this laptop is quite robust too as I have dropped it several times (I'm quite clumsy!) although I'm not saying throw it out of window because frankly that would be silly and it probably wouldn't work afterwards! (Poor laptop) It also looks very nice, I have the red version and it looks a lot more expensive than what it was.
All in all a great laptop for a great price!
I must say that I don't know that much about computers or laptops, I'm not really tech savvy, but... I do like to play computergames thought, so I'm a little bit of a geek, but just a little bit! ;)
Anyway, I love this laptop, I've bought it a while ago, I think it have been two months now and I must say that it's really powerfull and fully understands my needs. The guy in the store told me a dual core is quite good for a laptop because it will make it faster, and I must say it's pretty fast!
I also wanted to have a dvd rewriter in it to burn dvd's of my favorite movies. The screen is a bit too small to watch movies on it. But it's definately a plus for the laptop use, it makes it easier to carry around.
Also I have installed a couple of games I play a lot, these run perfectly, I must admit those games aren't the newest around, but my guess is that the newest games probably won't run really well, because it's still a laptop (and the guy in the store told me so, hihi).
I really do like the look of the laptop, I have the red version and it looks really nice.
Anyway, I can recommend you guys this product!
I bought this laptop from Amazon for my super fussy daughter's 18th Birthday. As well as a list of requirements as long as my arm from her,I had my know - it - all son giving his tuppence worth in terms of performance, storage capacity etc.
I settled on this model because a - she wanted a nice colour, b - he reckoned it had good spec, c - the price was OK and d - I had bought myself a Samsung R519 earlier in the year for myself and I am very happy with it.
I am very happy with this purchase- The set up etc was quick and easy with no complications.Samsung has a dedicated Recovery Solution centre for any problems. It is very easy to upload photographs etc. It connect to the internet quickly. Windows 7 is preinstalled and with all it's fab features it is a pleasure to use.
Samsung laptops are generally available at lower prices with better configurations. this is another example of such this. absolutely wonderful design and apart from it the features makes it further beautiful. Also its coming with Windows 7 home premium which absolutely suits the model and the features. 320 gb hard disk can be further upgraded with higher ones always but still enough for average user. It also provides enhanced usability with a 17-key numeric keypad which is new in the market and makes it unique from other such products in the market. This is also meant for the people who enjoy watching hd movies as the graphics is very good. Though it good for all but better for women users as its light weight [2.5 kg] makes easier to carry to any place. The wide screen 15.5" display is good for playing games as well. Overall we can rate this laptop 4 out of 5.
Samsung are known for other electronic products and not for their laptops, but I decided to buy this for my brother. However as as things unfolded I ended up using it more than he did.
The processor inside is not of the new generation of i3, i5 or i7, instead the laptop houses the older T generation of the desktop counterpart. In this laptops case, it is the T6600. Long ago people raved about CPU clock speeds and it became popular to assume that more MHz meant more power. Nowadays though even the CPU manufacturers - namely Intel and AMD - have approached their marketing sanely. No more is it all about MHz, the new fashion is about the number of Cores.
The R530 has a T6600 dual core processor. Laptop performance isn't solely CPU reliant as there are other factors such as hard drive, RAM, motherboard and system bus. But that is too much jargon to delve into for a simple review. The processor is a capable performer and will ease through office applications, browsing, video play back and some games. Gaming is not what this laptop should be considered for though as the onboard GMA X4500 isn't designed for gaming.
Strangely the laptop comes with 3GB RAM rather than 4GB RAM that Acer provide with many of their laptops for a similar price. However, the number isn't so strange when you consider that the operating system provided is a 32bit version which in layman terms cannot address the full 4GB of memory at its disposal. It would have been nice if Samsung did include the full 4GB for those who wish to use a 64bit OS. The amount of memory provided does not detract from its performance. It is more than sufficient and boots the operating system swiftly and applicatons such as Firefox or Internet Explorer load up instantly as you would expect.
Hard drive space can be a bone of contention depending on how you use and how much you use. I found that although 320GB seemed quite a lot, I had used up almost 75% of the space due to photo and video being processed on the laptop (and yes this laptop is also capabable of doing these things). Not a problem though especially if you use an external hard drive which I did.
The screen is a beautiful 15.6 inch and has a nice black finish to it. The resolution can seem a bit tiny especially if you are used to using a 23 inch on your main desktop. Contrast and colour is equally good and the monitor is easy on the eye. The 16:9 ratio means you can view widescreen movies and as the onboard supports HD you can also watch HD videos.
The DVD +/- RW drive also suppoerts DVD-RAM which basically means you can write to dual layer discs. Samsung actually do make some excellent optical drives (my main desktop has a Samsung DVD/Blueray drive) for desktop computers and this one on the laptop performs flawlessly.
I am not a fan of webcams and I have nearly stopped using them but on the ocassion that you do make a long distance Skype call, the webcam is a nice addition.
The keyboard is soft to the touch and well spaced out. It does not cramp you when typing and so is good on the hands. The touchpad is smooth and very responsive absolutely no issues with either of these parts on the laptop. I do however use a mouse.
Connectivity-wise theres LAN support with the WiFi and ethernet, three usb ports and suprisingly an HDMI out. Onboard WiFi support means that if you have a router you can pretty much use this laptop anywhere and everywhere in your household to access the internet. The reception of the wireless signal is very good. HDMI allows you to connect to another monitor if you wish.
The build quality is decent but perhaps a bit on the heavy side. Battery life is good providing around 4 hours (240 minutes) of operation. This can vary depending on how you use the laptop and goes down if you use graphics intensive applications or watch movies - it can still manage a 3 hour movie (very hard to find these days) without any cause for alarm.
Solid build quality
Great look & design
My final say: An elegant laptop that is soundly built but at times on the heavy side especially if you are constantly on the move.
This is a review meant for the non-techies and computer fearful among us and as such I warn those more clued up that they will not perhaps find it very useful in technical detail and may not want to read it. However any constructive advice would be more than welcome.
I always wondered exactly what a "catastrophic failure" in computer terms meant, I imagined flashing lights, big bangs, flying terabytes (I am sure I saw one of these circling the trees the other day), but no, apparently it's when your computer quietly lies down and dies as I recently discovered.
Witnessing the silent death of a computer is a pretty traumatic event, confusion is quickly followed by disbelief then panic, you are gripped with an irrational rage and finally unfettered grief at the loss of everybyte you hold dear.
The self recrimination for failing to use a back-up disk is a heartrending and piteous sight.
As you will already have guessed I am no computer buff and although I loved mine dearly I knew practically nothing of its inner workings and needs, ignorance was bliss until that sad day when everything just went black. Oh woe is me.
Acceptance of my enormous loss comes at a heavy price, £599 to be exact in the form of a shiny new Samsung R580 laptop.
This is what I got for my money:-
320GB Hard drive space combined with 5400rpm processing speed which is I think, pretty adequate for my basic needs of web surfing, document writing and communication. However if you are in to gaming then this may not be for you.
RAM or random access memory is computer speak for the space needed for the computer to handle whatever it is that you are working on at any given moment and the Samsung has a chunky 4GB.
The operating system is Windows 7, I was previously on Windows XP on my dearly departed, and I admit to not knowing the difference, but as far as I can tell works like a dream!
The display is 15.9" of glossy backlit screen and is beautifully clear with vivid colours. You can easily and quickly adjust the brightness for tired eyes or to reduce battery usage by clicking on the battery icon in the bottom right corner.
Web Cam , mic and 2x1.5w stereo speakers are all integral.
Graphic card is NVIDIA GEFORCE.
There is an abundance of connectivity in the way of USB ports, HDMI, Ethernet, eSATA( the slot that can connect your laptop to external hard drives which incidentally is handy when it comes to backing-up all those precious files), 3in 1 multi card slot for SD / SDHC / MMC (all memory card thingy's) Bluetooth is there too, useful for transferring stuff to or from your laptop quickly.
There are 11 games preloaded 3 of which are internet games if you are into that. Personally I find Solitaire dangerously addictive but you know what they say about simple things.....
The touch pad is seamlessly sited on the palm rest and is indicated by 4 tiny blue lights. Which looks and feels quite cool.
This is a case of two fingers being better than one. Use two fingers on the touch pad and you can magnify + or - , scroll up and down the page or side to side without moving the cursor to the slider bar, and rotate images. All in all my new laptop does everything I want it to, quickly, without hassle, and, with its dark red high gloss exterior, looks pretty good too.
Looks aside this is a solidly constructed laptop which does what it says on the tin (for those who understand what the tin says) and I am well pleased so far.
If I had to find a minus it would be the opening of the thing, it is quite stiff and definitely a two handed job with nowhere to grip, but then I suppose that a seamless clean look is achieved by having no odd bits sticking in or out so I'll take that back.
I found the doo-yoo buyer guide invaluable in taking my first steps to educate myself in the world of computer jargon, what an alien and confusing a world it is! I used the guide to determine my minimum requirements as far as I was able and then looked at reviews of the products I fancied and that fit the bill, as you do.
On looks, style and functionality I don't hesitate to give this product 5 out of 5.
I bought this laptop a month ago and I have to say it's fantastic. I found it easy to use and it is much quicker than my old laptop. By the look and feel of the laptop you can definitely tell it's been designed and made well and to go along with this, the laptop has very good specs.
HDD 320 GB - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium - 3GB Ram - Webcam - 15.6" Widescreen TFT 1366 x 768 ( WXGA )
Another thing I was pleased with was the impressive battery life especially considering it's high spec; this made it very portable and a pleasure to use. I think i'll continue to buy products from Toshiba as this laptop is perfect, I haven't had a single problem with it and i'm sure this laptop will last me a long time into the future indeed. For me this laptop is 5*.
This laptop is defiantly one that stands out from the crowd. It has quite a good spec with a 320 GB Hard Drive and 3 GB of RAM, making this laptop absolutely fly.
It has defiantly been well designed and is very sleek. It even has a brushed aluminium keyboard surround, something that is a little but special, quite unusual to find something like this in this price range. The build quality is quite good and it is quite lightweight too. This makes it very portable and the perfect candidate if your in up and down the country on the train all the time, or always jetting of to meet foreign clients, business meetings etc.
It has very nice smooth keyboard making it very easy and comfortable to type on. It also has a decent sized trackpad for your fingers. It has quite a sizeable 15.6 inch screen with very good brightness and colours. It also has all the usual features such as integrated WIFI and USB's etc. as well as a very good 244 min battery life.
It comes pre-installed with windows latest operating system, Windows 7. This is very fast and easy to use, in my opinion, much better than its predecessor, Windows Vista.
Overall, I would defiantly recommend this laptop to anybody.
I have to say that I purchased this laptop a few weeks ago, and I absolutely love it, it is bright, and crisp with the graphics, it is fast and easy to use, and set up, it looks smart and it has a full keyboard. the screen is amazing in size, and you can see every detail with fantastic graphics. It has a built in webcam which for me is fantastic when I am talking to my friends and family on windows live. The keyboard is very nice and soft to use. Samsung do a great job with their laptops, this is my third purchase with a samsung laptop and I am still impressed, they just get better and better with their technology. i recommend this laptop to anyone, and if you have children they also do a notebook, my son has one and it is great for him, I don't think that you can fault samsung at all especially with this. This comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, and although this was the first time I have ever used it... it just seemed to go so well with this laptop... so if you need a laptop go for this... you will not disappointed at all!!
