The Samsung R730 laptop is on a larger scale than standard Laptops with its 17 inch screen making it ideal for those requiring a larger display. In terms of looks, this laptop is eye catching with a glossy, red lid and a brushed steel effect interior. The steel colour extends to the mouse-pad, however the keyboard is a standard black.
Battery life is mediocre which is not ideal. The laptop has all the basic features that the average user would need including a webcam, HDMI & USB ports, media card reader and CD/DVD drive.
After several months of use, this laptop is still very responsive however the touchpad buttons are showing signs of wear with one being more pushed in than the other. I have also experienced problems with the display driver which causes the laptop to completely shut down which can be irritating.
Overall, this laptop looks great; sleek, slim and lightweight. The lightness of the machine causes it to feel a little flimsy and the functionality of the machine is not up to the standard I would expect from such a respected brand.
Firstly, this is my first review so please feel free to leave any tips or comments on how to improve it!
I have owned this laptop for around 10 months now. It came as a free gift with a mobile phone package. There was a choice of a few different laptops and after doing a little research I decided to go for the Samsung R730. I have never regretted my decision.
It came boxed with a few instruction leaflets and both a European and UK charger. On opening I was very impressed - the outer of the laptop is sturdy and well-made. There is nothing to give away the fact that this is very much a lower budget laptop. The outer of the laptop is a simple red colour with the Samsung logo on it. The laptop proved it's sturdiness to me when I dropped it and it hit the corner of my coffee table. I now have lovely dent on the outer (on the top) of the laptop but it has not affected the screen or laptop in any way.
The screen itself is a large 17.5inches. The screen size was one of the biggest factors influencing my decision as I wanted to watch DVDs and I hate watching them on a small screen! Despite the large screen the laptop is not too bulky and when closed it is less than 2inches thick. It weighs in at less than 3kg which is admittedly a bit heavier than a lot of laptops but for carrying around the house it doesn't feel heavy at all. I would not recommend this as a portable laptop and would advise you to choose a smaller one which would be easier to carry in a laptop bag. This laptop is more like
The keys are large, well spaced and clear. The mouse pad is accurate and easy to use. There is plenty of room to rest your wrists with the laptop on your knee. I have a 10month old daughter who has managed to pop off a couple of keys and they have easily clipped back on.
Now, for the inside of the laptop - the bit that really matters! For a budget laptop, the specifications are towards the higher end of the scale. I do not understand most of the specifications but the ones that matter to me most are the Intel Pentium Dual Core P6100 2GHz processor, the 4GB RAM and the 500GB hard drive. All are adequate for everyday games, internet, e-mail, DVD/TV watching, storing photos etc. I was worried as it does not have a dedicated graphics card but I haven't found any games it hasn't been able to play.
It has a built in WiFi reader (this is the bit you need to connect to your internet router without any wires or USB dongle sticks) and has a HDMI output port so you can hook it up to your HDTV. It has your standard CD/DVD reader and 3 USB ports. It has a headphone and microphone jack. It has a port to be connected via wires to your router or modem if you would prefer this and it also has the port to connect the charger. The charger cable is a good couple of metres long.
I consider the battery life to be just "good". It lasts around 2 hours if I only have a few things running and slightly less if I have a game running with the internet and other programs running in the background. I have not found any difference in the battery life after using it 10+ hours a day for 10months.
Overall, I think this is a good, reliable, affordable laptop. I would have no hesitation recommending it to friends and family. I have no complains and have had no problems with my Samsung R730.
The Samsung R730 is a good laptop which packs a decent package but don't expect it to do wonders and be a powerhouse! The laptop has many good features and for the typical asking price you can't go wrong!
The laptop features wi-fi which is a very handy thing to have in a laptop (Although it is pretty much standard now) and you can connect anywhere, provided there is a wi-fi connection. However the wi-fi signal in the laptop is very strong and is very easy to set up. One of the main features of the laptop is the fact that it packs a 17.3 inch screen which is quite big for a laptop and there are certain advantages and disadvantages. Firstly having a big screen means you get more screen space which can never be a bad thing, however with the big screen the size of the laptop also increases which can be a portability problem.
One slight annoyance with the laptop is the battery life. The battery seems to run out very quickly and this gets annoying as most of the time you have the laptop charging rather than using it without it being charged with can be annoying.
Overall this is a good laptop but do not expect it to be a very top of the range laptop. Like I said it is very quick and efficient for everyday use and for that this makes it a very good laptop.
Samsung R730 review - when my last Samsung laptop finally gave up after a couple of years of loyal service I decided another Samsung was the way to go.
This model is excellent in terms of ease of use, it deals with my heavy usage as a web designer and certainly hasn't struggled in any way to run the many applications I use. The screen is crisp and clear, the graphics are excellent although I cannot comment on its usage for online gaming, I have found it to be more than I expected.
Multiple usb ports, sd card slot and hdmi make this worthy of consideration by almost any user.
It is simple to use, straight out of the box. There are a few questions asked when you boot it for the first time, but I was ready to go in under an hour with no fiddling with disks etc.
Running Windows 7 and Office Professional, the system is speedy and responsive. Added to this the low pricetag for such a well specced machine it is difficult to beat in terms of solid, good quality reliability and good looks.
I regularly watch films on my laptop and have found it to be exemplary. I really cannot find fault with it other than a personal preference for the charger to be plugged in at the back. Even the weight isn't a problem considering it is a 17" screen, all housed in a slim design.
I would certainly buy this laptop over the competition on the market currently.
As a university student I was looking for a relatively cheap, but good quality laptop, this I found in the Samsung R730. When you're living away from home, a student looks for more in a laptop than just a word processor (which of course this model is still great for!). The large screen is ideal for watching dvds and television using the online services. It comes with a good wifi system enabling you to browse the internet when you're out and about. It also comes with a built in webcam this laptop can help save money, as it is ideal for use with skype, and therefore allows you to make free video calls, over the internet. The one slight downside is the operating system, at first I found windows 7 slightly more complicated to use, as i was used to Windows Vista. However, after a few hours I soon got used to it and realised that it comes with many benefit, including a faster start up. I would highly recommend this laptop, i haven't encountered any problems with this model, and it has a sleek and stylish design, which is a bonus at it looks more expensive than it actually is!!
I recently received this laptop as a type of free gift when i took out a mobile phone contract and as i needed a new laptop i thought i would give this one a go as it is meant to be a top spec model.
Although im not computer minded i wanted to write a review about this laptop as i believe it's one of the best out there, and wanted to give you an idea of what they are like.
They do retail at around £500 although it varies on place to place.
- Runs on Windows 7
- Intel Pentium T4300
- 4 GB system memory
- 17.3 inches LED HD+ screen
- Samsung recovery system
- Mini numeric keyboard attached to main one
- Built in webcam
- HDMI port
- LED backlighting
- It comes with a national and international warranty.
Also it is TCO certified meaning that it has been made and tested in line with the strictest environmental criteria. It had been given an A rating for electrical consumption, therefore being quite cheap to run.
***When it cam home***
The first thing I noticed when I got it out of the box (apart from excess packaging) was that the top cover of the laptop was a very nice red swirls pattern, which I think makes it stand out from others.Ive even been asked where i bough the 'laptop skin' from!! The actual bottom part is made from a scratch resistant material and looks slightly like chrome.
Setting up the laptop is quick and easy and takes about 15 mins in total as it keeps having to restart and then you have to sort out your recovery system but once that's all done it takes less than 3 minutes to turn on and actually go on the web.
This laptop comes with free McAfee web security although ive also added AVG to this as i didn't really think it was enough.
The layout of the options on the desktop is good and easy to navigate although the start menu is slightly small and could be hard to read for some. I like the fact that the pages you have open are denoted as little pictures of the website in the bottom bar on the screen.
I have also uploaded itunes onto my laptop and the sound quality is very good it is very crisp.
Picture quality is also amazing good for a laptop and as its HD its also a lot clearer than other laptops, and having a 17 inch screen is great for watching films on!!
The sensor pad is also really good it is a bit sensitive though and if changes you zoom if you drag your finger in the wrong direction-which can be very annoying. It does have a blue light that shines all around it to show when its in use or about to go into standby/sleep mode.
When its not plugged in it has about a 3 hour battery which I find is more than enough, although when I received it I was told that the batteries in these might not last as long as other ones. I good thing about this battery is that when not plugged into the mains if you turn it upside down there is a little gauge telling you how much battery life is left.
Memory wise it's GREAT I have uploaded so many songs a few films and documents amongst other things-using half the memory and its still just as quick as before!
Now one bad point I have found is that although it has a built in webcam, trying to find out how to configure it etc is impossible and im still looking for it a month into having it, but apart from that i think the webcam is a good idea it is built into the laptop just above the centre of the screen.
It is a very easy laptop to use and my son is often on it playing on cbeebies and even he can navigate his way around! I also found that is already has parent guards on it so I didn't have to set that up although I went through it and made sure!
There are 3 USB ports one on the left side of the laptop and 2 on the right side one above the other so you can connect many things at once which is always useful, and when you connect things to them the drivers are quick to install and your things are ready to use in mere minutes.
I have not used the HDMI port yet but am planning to now just to see what its like.
There are also ports for speakers and microphones on the left side and also a port for Ethernet connections although i have only used the wireless facility.
As it has such a big screen you have to make sure that if you want to use a photo as your background you have to enlarge it to fit the screen properly so it does'nt become pixelated.
Overall I believe that this is a great laptop which is easy to use and cheaper than many other notebooks available out there.
Thank you for reading :)
