A great laptop
Member Name: Amyrose
Advantages: reasonable price, easy to use
Disadvantages: internet tabs and keyboard take some getting used to
Sadly my beloved laptop (which I have only had for a few years) recently passed away. It now just shows me a blue light and has no life left. I didn't have much time to grieve as I needed a new laptop and quick! Having looked at various shops and prices and ratings etc. I decided on purchasing a Samsung RV510 from Argos at the price of £379.99. I thought this was a reasonable price for a laptop, a nice kind of middle price range.
=== Setting up ===
When I got this home I set it up straight away. Set up was incredibly easy and guided you through creating a password, setting up a wireless connection and other general settings. The laptop comes pre - set up with media player, a link to the internet, sticky notes (which I find incredibly handy when I need a reminder) and a trial version of Microsoft office. I purchased a product key for office and found it incredible easy to activate should you wish to do this.
This laptop took some getting used to as it is quite different to my previous Toshiba. There is a HD widescreen which I believe is 15.6 inches. I am not a very technical person but I think that the quality of the picture on the screen is brilliant. This laptop is fairly lightweight I would say considering it is a fair sized laptop and looks very sleek when closed. The lid is a lovely shiny black with Samsung written quite simple on one side. When you open the lid you can see the widescreen with a built in webcam (which I have not yet tested), and a basic keyboard with silver surroundings. I found that the keyboard took quite a lot of getting used to. There is no space between the main keyboard and the number keys so I find I often hit a button that I didn't want to. I also found the keys themselves a little tricky to get used to. My previous laptop had buttons that were slightly slanted and so were very comfortable to use. This laptop's keys have raised squares on them which mean that I end up having to apply more pressure than previously but after some time this is not a problem as I have now become more used to this. The touch pad for the mouse is easy to use and not too sensitive. There are the usual left and right buttons, nothing special there.
=== Power and battery life ===
The plug in charger that comes with this laptop is pretty standard. The chunky part of the charger has a light which turns on when plugged in correctly which I find is a nice touch. Depending on what is being used on the laptop I find that battery life alone can last for up to 3 hours or so which I think is fairly good. There is also the option of changing the power plan which can be handy should you wish to extend battery life a little longer.
=== Sound ===
The sound on this laptop I would say is average. It is really nothing special and almost has a slight tinny effect although this doesn't bother me massively. The maximum volume is reasonable, it goes as loud as I need it to so this suits me fine.
=== Windows 7 ===
This laptop is equipped with windows 7 which I haven't used before. I find that everything is easy to navigate on the laptop although use of the internet can annoy me. When you have multiple windows up they do not come up as separate tabs at the bottom of the screen. You need to hover over the internet tab to select which window you want to view. This really irritates me as I like to be able to see very quickly exactly what I have up on view. I find the speed of the internet is fine but as I am not a very technically minded person I don't know if this is due to my internet provider, internal things inside the laptop, or a bit of both!
=== Other things ===
I find that I can often need to use lots of cables at once for the laptop, e.g. printer cable, memory stick and this laptop is well equipped with 3 usb ports. I always use wireless internet but there is a slot for a cable should you have wired internet. There is a disk drive which is pretty standard and I also believe there is a dvd/ cd writing programme on here although I have never used it and so could not comment on abilities in that sense. This laptop works very quickly and I do not have to wait very long between my actions and the laptops responses e.g. if I want to open a programme it does so very quickly. There is an option on this laptop to back up all of your files onto a sectioned off part of a drive which I think is something I desperately need to do, and is a great idea if, like me, you are a bit forgetful and don't back up your files as you should do. I am frequently notified when new updates are available although sometimes when I shut down the laptop it automatically installs these which irritates me. I would like to choose when to install them as sometimes I just need to very quickly switch my laptop off before going out somewhere and do not have the time to wait around for it to turn off.
=== Some technical bits ===
I'm not going to list specific technical things but I will mention a few. The storage has a space of 640GB on the hard drive - I have to be honest in that this doesn't mean a great deal to me but so far what I do have stored has taken up a tiny fraction of the overall space so I would say that this is a very reasonable GB for a hard drive. There is a 4GB RAM memory (again not too sure what this means , and also a 2.1Ghz processor speed. I think that this contributes to the fast running speed which I love as nothing frustrates me more than a slow running laptop.
=== Overall thoughts and would I recommend? ===
Overall, although it did take me quite some time to get used to, I think that this is a very good laptop especially for the price considering some are far more expensive. This laptop does everything I need it to do and works at a high speed which I love. I would like to choose when I would like to install updates and am not particularly keen on the way tabs show up for the internet, but I guess you can't have it all. Overall I would say this is a fantastic laptop at a reasonable price and I would recommend to anyone who just has basic needs and doesn't need it for anything particularly fancy.
Thanks for reading.
