sony aw41zf/b one of the best on the market managed to buy one of the first in country and cannot find any faults anywhere, it is slim and extremely portable and the large screen with top notch graphics gives a very clear image, The built in programes also are very easy to use and so make this machine a must. I live in a very bad area for broadband but I can do things on this laptop at more than twice the speed of other laptops in the house. The storage capacity is unbelievable, all my music and photos can go with me anywhere and still have lots of workspace with no loss of performance. Blu-ray is a big plus as well films look the best ever MONEY WELL SPENT

Very nice compact laptop but not lacking on performance capabilities

This Sony vaio laptop is defiantly one of the laptops of my choice. The reason being is because of its speed, portability and usage. Being a notebook does not mean you have to sacrifice speed, more with this model it boosts the speed.

With an Intel Centrino 2 platform is a big boost meaning in simple terms than it is specially designed for mobile performance, extended battery life, increased wifi capabilities and generally faster. You get Bluetooth, Stereo speakers, and Wifi LAN meaning you can connect up to your work/school/home network wirelessly.

Being just a feeble 3.8kg lets you take it anywhere without it weighing you down.

The notebook also comes with a very reward able 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo Intel processor which makes things run much fast than expected and on top of that a massive 4 GB ram which can be replaced with an 8 GB ram, all in a notebook! We are talking desktop specs in a notebook! Having a 64-bit capability lets you use that extra ram much more effectively and easily as well.

Storage is Serial ATA not Sata so not much changing there. What really surprises me is that Sony have managed to put a 500gb hard drive in this notebook without weighing it down. 500gb hard drive is normally what you would have in a mid range desktop computer so Sony really have not lacked in storage and performance but just made it all lighter and fit in a smaller space.

This lets you write CDs at very fast speeds, which is very much appreciated if you are a mobile DJ. It has the normal full card reader letting you transfer pictures from literally all card storage including USB. Sony have put a widescreen and very high resolution on top of all this giving an amazing screen quality experience for all those gamers and media enthusiasts out there, you get high definition audio and home cinema capabilities as well so no lack on the sound capabilities either by Sony.

You get an inbuilt camera and touch sensitive keyboard and number pad and touch mouse pad aswell, the keys are not crammed together either letting you type like on a normal desktop keyboard.

Let alone all the battery life expansions and technology Sony have put into this net book you get a 2 hour run time which is pretty decent for a laptop though. Windows 7 and much more security software ect is included in this so no extra costs to pay for, the one thing I don't like about this laptop is no fire wire port, this generally speaking is not used much but is a bit of a blow for media enthusiasts, apart from that slight drawback everything else works really well.

a good laptop, easy to use

Hi , welcome to my review for the Sony VGN-FW41E.
When looking to upgrade i went into different shops and compared prices and specification along with overall looks and quality of picture on the screen. This is no easy feat with many different brands and specifications available, to be honest my understanding of computers improved during this stage as i had to get used to the tech talk and also look into my needs more.
It pays to look these things up your self , the advice given in many shops was often conflicting and left me feeling confused .
The key points for me were 4 GB of ram and the intel CORE duo cpu, and after much reading concluded this to be what was needed to keep up on the internet and with the processes and applications i use. It would appear that windows Vista has quite a drain on the ram, also add to that the anti-virus of your choice and that can be a fair chunk of that ram used up, meaning slow performance if your ram is less than 2GB.
The laptop comes with Vista home premium installed, but does qualify for a 'free' upgrade to windows 7 until the end of january 2010. The 'free' upgrade as it turns out costs £20 in postage and packing.
The screen is very nice giving good clarity , although when watching a film the viewing angle becomes more important. The key pad is a joy to use , easy and light but positive.
The battery life is in the region pf 2 hours , not brilliant but comparable to others of this size, this should improve when windows 7 is installed as it uses less power.
Also fitted with 'blue ray' and HDMI socket, giving high definition output.
The Sony name was also a big plus , when researching they would appear to be reliable.
The biggest bug bear is the lack of usb ports on the left hand side, when using the internet dongle it means quite often careful placing is needed as the lead supplied with the dongle is not very long.
A good laptop ? yes , worth the money ? difficult to answer that !
Reliable? i will update and keep you informed.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Good, would recommend, but improve the battery life!

The sony Vaio AW... a large laptop with a lot of punch. The screen size is a big selling point. Who wouldn't want a big 18.4 inch screen with an amazing array of colour definition. The only problem with the Sony Vaios of this size is well.... the last part.

The laptop itself is near top of the range with the RAM and processor at a reasonable size and the hard-drive a massive 1TB. But the size of this monster means in short that it consumes LOADS of power. The battery life is shorter than you could imagine, knocking in a 1 to 1 and a half hours for a normal battery.

This means the laptop enables some fancy energy saving tricks... including darkening the screen. While for many this doesn't sound too bad, trust me it is. You pay for this big screen yet to experience the full capabilities of it you need to have it constantly charging... that falls below my personal expectations at least! You can make your own minds up as regards to whether you find it being plugged in 24/7 annoying or not.
