Firstly, I love the stylish yet simple design of this laptop. They keyboard's seperated keys was the main selling point for me as laptop keyboards are often quite cumbersome to type on. The only down side is that dirt can build up between the keys and it's quite hard to clean. The specs of this machine are more than adequate for the average user, and could even be used for more intenstive things such as video editing, although I would recommend using an external hard drive as the built-in one is very slow. Viewing angle of the screen is average, but not amazing. The colour replication seems to be fine, and video playback is good though I have noticed some shearing when playing certain videos.
I bought this laptop refurbished, so take all the negative points I say with a pinch of salt! There seems to be a strange problem when the laptop is running off the battery and is left for a while, sometimes the audio will stop working! This can be fixed by putting it in and back out of standby, but still is a bit of a pain.
The battery life of this machine is not great. I can usually squeeze out about 2-2.5 hours from it, so if you're planning on taking this travelling then buy an extra battery (or make sure you're always near a power socket!).
It's the same with all Sony laptops, but one thing I really hated was all the pre-installed software. I literally had to spend over an hour removing it all! Be careful not to just blindly remove it all though, as some of it is useful - I discovered Photoshop Elements was included with my laptop. I definitely recommend spending the time to remove it all, as it will not only speed up your machine but also give you more hard drive space.
By all accounts this a good high spec computer, but if like me you are not enamored with the Windows Vista operating system and want to downgrade to XP you will find it extremely difficult. Sony do not provide the XP equivalent drivers required if your model is classed as a personal computer, they were not very helpful which annoyed me after I spent a substantial amount of money on this computer. I am currently finding it very difficult to get these drivers online. It makes me wonder what if one wanted to use another operating system what problems would arise. Its a shame that Windows Vista is being force fed to us in this manner as it is really only a cheap imitation of the Mac OS with Microsoft vested interests embedded within.
Sony Vaio CR31Z/R
Sony has launched some luxurious notebooks since last couple of years, and the CR series from Sony became more popular in these days. Looks and feel are extremely good in this series. Sony has mainly targeted on solid looking notebooks with adequate features and latest technology also. In this series the new model Vaio CR31Z now in market with fully featured and configured.
Here is again my discussion points will be its good features with advantages and disadvantages also. First of all I always use to target my first discussion on processor of any notebook, because it is more important in all features at all. So here is also a good processor we can see in this model with Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 with 2.4 GHz of clock speed. Front size bus speed is about 800 MHz and L2 cache size is 3 MB, in my opinion this processor is extremely good for notebook uses in any kind of latest applications of gaming experience. Generally we see that the clock speed in notebook processor remain about 2 GHz and front size bus speed about 600 MHz, so this processor has slightly higher clock speed and bus size. Go ahead with having better experience with high speed processor with Sony.
Now the point of discussion about memory size of this model in terms of internal memory and RAM and hard disk drive. The Ram size is something common with compare to some other laptops it is around 2GB of DDR2 SDRAM with 667 MHz of speed, not bad at all with sufficient capacity and having further up-gradation option up to 4 GB. If we consider about the RAM size than we should analyze our requirements, if we are planning to purchase this laptop for general purpose or use than this RAM is sufficient enough and if our target is higher gaming or 3D modeling work with heavy graphics than it will be better to upgrade this size to 4 GB.
I faced some problem with 4GB RAM also in 3DS max application with higher modeling, the RAM can't do everything with graphics, there should be a better graphics card also and now the next discussion is about graphics card.
Graphics is a another main feature with any laptop and here is also an good graphics available with ATI Mobility Radeon X2300, having about 831 MB of total available graphics memory, this is not a totally dedicated graphics memory, it is shared with RAM and provide required graphics memory to applications. Here is more important point is that this graphics card has a feature of taking extra required memory from Ram so that RAM capacity also should be more enough to full fill both requirements. We can't take this size of graphics memory so easily it is best available in laptops and can deal well with extremely high graphics applications and games.
This notebook is not targeted with gaming market but Sony has provided good processor with better graphics memory, and the display size is normal with 14.1" wide screen TFT display.
Other features are more or less common with compare to all other notebooks like LAN card, camera, connectivity solutions, audio, battery etc.
Over all conclusion
As a 14.1" series notebook it is best available notebook in the market with high configured and latest features. Recommended.
