      Very helpful

A good all rounder laptop even after 3 years let down by a few problems

I purchased this laptop in august 2007 for £900 from the Sony Centre before I started university. At the time it was powerful (on a scale of 5 I would give it 4 out of 5), so my Initial use was a pleasent expeirence. I will not write about the specs since they are posted up on dooyoo.

In the box the contents were the laptop, power supply unit and i had a mouse and 1 year insurance thrown in for free.

Upon setting up the laptop i had to set up vista which was preloaded with a lot of sony vaio bloatware. So what I did was I installed a fresh copy of vista and downloaded a few drivers.

The laptop was fast, good handled multiple applications well. video playback was smooth thanks to the dedicated graphics cards. The laptop did not reallly crash andmy day to day tasks were fine.

Now I am still using this laptop and unfortunatly i did have a few problems. first thing was my left arrow key one day fell off and my left mouse button worn off (so I have to press hard). As well as my battery not working. All of these problems occured after 14-16 months after i bought the laptop.

But the worst problem I encountered was that after 2 years my screen went funny. After much research on the internet I found out that I was not the only one. The problem was that almost all models of my laptop (and others from a similar range will have this problem) had a design flaw on the nvidia graphic chip which will die in the laptop. Because I was lazy I took it to a local computer shop to get it replaced for £80. I was told that this would happen again so I was told to get the laptop well ventilated. I plan to get a new laptop next year anyway. There is a extended warranty for this problem for up to 4 years from day of purchase, but since I got it replaced I did not look into it.

I installed a fresh copy of windows 7 and after a few tweaking it still faster than most mid range laptops of today. I wanted to increase the ram from 2GB to 4GB but cannot find any compatible upgrade.

Its a good laptop with a few problems... The model was discontinued a long time a go, but I thought I would share my thoughts to anyone who bought one second hand or anyone who still uses it.

I would reccomend installing windows 7 on this since it would be faster than vista that was preloaded but use the vista driver for the nvidia chip and everyhing else will be fine.

p.s If anyone has sucessfully increased the ram please let me know thanks.
