This is indeed a very excellent laptop from Sony and is very affordable. It has alot to offer to the quality of the machine.
I found the laptop to be a great alternative to the apple macbook for my university studies as a graphics/ digital designer.
Using software programs for the use of photo editing, illustration, website design and other programs that like to use ram can become very frustrating when only having little memory, but this VAIO laptop with its 1GB (2GB max) of DDR II memory is more that certainly cut out for the job, and Its got a large 15" inch widescreen crisp clear display that is capable of displaying almost all programs with no problems at all.
Conectivity to the laptop is very reasonable with four ubs ports and one fire wire port (4 pin), you will never be without a port spare. It also has two memory card readers (for SD and also MS) and an express card slot (as broadband internet become more freely mobile , its becoming more increasingly popular to have these ExpressCard broadband from providers as supposed to the usb alternative)
The battery live is also extremely excelent on This VAIO machine, with up to 3 and a half hours life on average use (internet, word, and playing music) and moderatly fast charging, you can't go wrong in choice.
Overall this laptop is fantastic for the average user, and students that don't have a big budget on the price of a machine, its not particually great with newer games, but runs most old games and classic games really well.
This laptop feels very solid, with the screen being crystal clear and the keyboard very easy to type on. The sound quality is also very good compared to other laptops i have owned.
It comes preinstalled with vista which is good looking and also makes life much easier when u learn all the new features it provides. I particuarly like the position of the SD and Memory Stick Pro card readers, although i feel it would have been much better if an XD card reader was included (possible because my camera uses an XD card); this is not particularly big problem though as i can just easily use the USB cable. Another part of the laptop i liked was the position of the USB ports (On the sides near the front), as they are very easily accessible to me without having to juggle the whole thing around to find the ports on the back.
The laptop is quite fast although does speed up quite significantly once the bundled vaio software is removed. The laptop is also very quiet meaning i can leave it on overnight sometimes and it wont be constantly waking me up.
The boot up speed is also incredably fast compared to past PC's and Laptops i have used, meaning it is no longer as much of a problem after i have installed a new program. Sometimes however i seem to get small program errors, programs not reponding etc....
The onboard graphics card isnt the best ever, but they never are on laptops. I was able to play several games quite easily with very little lag, however, i found that anything else running at the same time as some of my games (such as MSN or music in the background) the game would sometimes crash, leaving me to start it up again.
I have included the spec of the laptop below:
