Product:

Sony Vaio GRX416G

Date: 22/07/03 (427 review reads)
Rating:

Advantages: 16.1" LCD screen, Good looking, Fast DVD/CD-RW

Disadvantages: Too heavy, Too big to be portable

I bought the PC in Italy in September 2002, and paid 2,500 euro.
Never had any hardware problem. The ac adaptor broke down, most probably due to a sudden and high variation in the voltage( I am using it in Qatar....now I have two voltage regulators, one home and one in the office, as I paid 150 US$ for a new adapter.

Screen :
Stunning 16.1" LCD, but you have to choose the right angle of view when facing it

Ports :
There is no integrated microphone : an external one is needed (additional cables hanging around).
No line-in:bad for computer music fanatics.
No com ports: bad if you want to connect your GSM and the manufacturer does not sell USB cable connection.
No IR or Bluetooth : only 3 USB....not enough ! one for the mouse, one for the printer and one for the webcam.....if you have an external usb hard drive or usb connected gsm you have to unplug a device (or buy an USB hub : more cables).
No Wi-Fi :if you?re a frequent-flyer you wishto be able to connect to the web using the available Hot spots in airports and restaurant, then you have to buy a PCMCIA wireless card (as I did) : once installed, the card can permanently sit inside the slot, provided that is one of the latest ,with a very small antenna, because the one I bought pokes out of the slot and when I store my Vaio in its carrying case, I have to remove it.
To solve the problem of the ports you might want to buy the optional Sony Vaio Port Replicator: watch your wallet !!

Weight:
Too Heavy:3,8 Kg (ac adaptor not included).
This is a desktop replacement, not a laptop (if you are a frequent-flyer do not buy it, and go for something not more than 2Kgs).

Hard disk:
Noisy Hard disk :keeps clicking....you might solve the problem by defragmenting periodically your files.

Memory:
256 Mb are not enough : you need to buy additional 256Mb to run games properly and to watch DVD without
The jog dial is not a va
lue-adding feature, it's just an attraction.
I personally never use it.

Cards:
Ati Mobility Radeon 7500 and Yamaha Sound card are top quality.
Memory stick reader and Firewire port : never used. It's a "nice to have" if you own a Sony Digital Camera

Some useful thoughts but a little information on the performance would have made for a better all round op!
