Advantages: Very nice looking machine, Decent storage and memory, It's sony!
Disadvantages: Not the fastest machine in the world, Shared video memory
This is an excellent laptop aimed at office/student productivity than anything else, and is well suited to these applications. This laptop is ideal for tasks such as word processing, desktop publishing, as well as various other office tasks. If you're after a gaming machine however, this isn't the tool for the job. This is due to the relatively slow 850MHz processor (as I type this, you could buy a laptop with a 3GHz (3000MHz) processor), accompainied by a reasonable 512MB RAM, although this can be upgraded to 384MB (for a cost, obviously). This laptop has a shared video memory configuration, which means there is no dedicated memory for the sole purpose of displaying graphics. This is a good idea if price is your primary concern, but a bad idea if you're after a gaming machine, or indeed a machine for any sort of Computer Aided Design. The 14.1" screen gives excellent clarity and colour definition as far as laptop screens go, and offers a standard max resolution for screens this size, of 1024 by 768 pixels. We have a built in network adapter, a nice feature not always seen on a laptop of this price. This makes it an ideal student machine, you can just hook up to your University's network and off you go. We've the bog-standard kit so far as sound output goes, which is more than adequate for listening to music while you work. All round, a decent machine for office/uni work, excellent value for money which delivers decent performance for the tasks it was designed!

The Duke - 28.03.04 Hi there, it would would have been nice to have read a bit more about your personal experiences with the laptop rather than a rough idea of the specifications. Adding YOUR opinion about the weight, battery life etc. would greatly increase the usefulness of the opinion and give others a better idea of the laptop. If you add to this, please let me know (my contact details are on my profile page) and I will gladly re-read for you. |
