Toshiba Satellite C660-115
Advantages: nice design, good speed
Disadvantages: keyboard sticks
I recently got a laptop for my mother for her Christmas as hers just broke down on her suddenly. I wasn't sure what laptop to buy though as there is so much choice and there are a number of decent brands, so I narrowed it down by the one that had the best deal for what it was offering. Having taken in the hard drive size and speeds as well as what the laptop had in terms of memory etc, this laptop by Toshiba seemed to be the best and they are not a brand that I normally buy laptops from but every brand deserved a chance.
This laptop is really nice to look at, it is quite slim and has a textured black finish to it which opens and closes really easily. The laptop has the Toshiba logo displayed on the top in a really nice style and it looks very sleek. Inside it has a tracking pad and buttons to click around and the screen is a nice size at 15.6 inches which is a really good size for the screen. The keyboard is all black also and is very light to touch and the laptop has a weight of 2.3kg and is 25.4 x 38 x 28cm.
This laptop comes with a great amount of features for the price that it is and I was very happy to test this laptop out. The laptop comes with Windows 7 Edition Home Premium which is good enough if you have used it before, it does the job. I think Windows 7 is ok on this laptop and it has a nice enough look and is easy enough to navigate around. A built in web cam on the monitor is great and this is standard for most new laptops but this is just a bit better than most that I have used so far as the webcam is very sharp and is a 0.3mp camera.
I have used this on Skype and it is very good in terms of video, it doesn't pause or buffer when movement is on the video and it is very high quality and one of the best web cams that I have seen. Not only this but the volume is great and it picks up sound very easily with an inbuilt microphone so it is very sensitive. People I have spoken to on Skype can hear conversation in the background that is how clear it picks up which is great, so you can talk on this with ease as it has everything built into it saving awkward mic's and headphones.
The display on the laptop is also very good as it is a good colour on it and it comes with TruBrite Crystal Clear display just to make that picture look really sharp and smooth. There is built in wireless as most laptops also tend to have on them so there is no issues connecting to the internet and it has an ethernet dock if you want to plug in an ethernet cable instead. Either way going online on this laptop is great as it is very fast and there is no hesitation when loading pages as it loads them very quick.
Now, I have given a brief idea of my thoughts above while describing the features but now I have areas which I want to go into more detail with. The laptop has 3gb of RAM which is why it is very quick when using the laptop and also the DVD-ROM works good enough to when watching films. The sound goes high enough for playing films but maybe not as high as what it could be as the sound is not as sharp as some laptops I have used in the past. It has a 4 hour battery life on it which is long enough for most but I usually have it plugged in all of the time.
The hard drive being 320GB is more than enough space unless you are running a business but it'll take most people a while to use all of that up, even with iTunes on here. I have a lot of files on this laptop and still find that it has a lot of space left on it. Now, apart from the fact I have mostly been positive I just have one thing which annoys me about this laptop and that is the fact that the keyboard sticks at time or that you really have to hit keys very hard so that it isn't missing letters when you are typing.
It is a soft keyboard to type on so this could be the main reason why it is not always picking up letters that I hit. I think if the keyboard was just a bit deeper set then this problem would be resolved really quickly. I think though, the laptop has a lot of good things to offer and it runs well enough and seems reliable to me. I don't want to overload it with too much software so use this mainly for surfing the internet and using Microsoft Office but maybe if you use software for design etc this may not be the most appropriate.
This is a really good laptop and you get what you pay, it is by no means top of the range but considering I hadn't used a Toshiba laptop before this does seem to be fine to me. My mother is very pleased with it and cannot see my problem with the keyboard but I type a lot faster so this could be why. The camera is great for Skyping, the storage is high enough, the design is modern and the internet is good on it. The USB ports are also fine on here, really there is not a lot bad to say and it would suit most people.
I got this laptop cheap on Amazon for £399.99 but was the last to get this at this price as now it is £448 from Amazon with £6.12 delivery so just look around.
