Advantages: Good all round computer, Lots of variations and upgrades available at purchase
Disadvantages: Price, Aftersales service is very poor
First of all, yes i am a student but i am dyslexic so my LEA bought the compy for me. I could never in a million years pay £2000 for a compy, and if i did i would prefer a desk top so already i am slightly biased about the product. I had lots of additions to the basic computer, i had a DVD drive added and increased the memory to 256, and the processor to a p3 700. I am fairly sure the memnory was originally only 64, which in my feeble opinion is pointless if you have a processor above 500mhz any higher and the memory will slow you down. This is not a bad little laptop, it is probably designed for the business man so it is a bit brick like, (a bit like the nokia 5110, when the cool people want 8210's) it's black and rather heavy. The official Toshiba carry cases are reasonably priced at around £50 and well worth buying the slightly more expensive ones. My gripe is mainly over the after sales care. I bought this computer at the very end of last year and also got 3 years guarentee waranty oojimawotsit thingymajig. I thought this meant that i would easily be able to call Toshiba and get fairly instant help. Because i left my laptop unattended in the library whilst getting a book i had a few of the keyboard keys nicked. I have called Toshiba, contacted my original supplier and tried PC world type places. No-one seems to be able to help me get new keys. I could also do with a few new mouse covers, you know those little green/blue nipple type things. I even resorted to good old fashioned snail mail. My letter got a reply in Feb saying they would send everything within 28 days, i thing june is a little longer than that. Latest development was when i went to PC world again. They said nick them, yes they condoned crime, I asked them to turn around as i went to their toshiba section only to find some other person had beaten me to it on the mouse covers and the keys were all glued down due to a recent increase in thefts. It's a shame
really that things aren't easier after all i have paid a lot for the product and it works really well, I would recommend it to the one careful owner type, it you know you are likely to break occasional fiddly knobs etc you might be better going for a sony VAIO or something similar. Whatever you choose good luck, have fun xx
