Hello, i purchased this as a student at the time for £499 from Staples. My dad tried to steer me to the more powerful models, but the sleek look of the laptop had me sold. Fast forward 5 years, it's stood the test of time and i'm happy with the choice i made. I've the experience of working for a (demised) once leading electrical retailer, and would sum this up as saying, it's not the most powerful, and it's not the most impressive in terms of spec whatsoever, but it is a great laptop, and any negatives i mention are purely small matters or ones which can be corrected.
Reliability: Having worked in retail, and continually seeing laptops being discontinued after 6 months because they've been superceeded, i find it quite unbelievable that after 5 years mine is still going strong & meets my every expectation for varied requirements ie it's been used as a study aid, then for professional/personal purposes. Despite some mild abuse from my under 4 year old, it has come out unscathed.
Performance: Even though in this market most of the machine's components are extinct, the laptop continues to exceed expectations, on paper it would lose to today's competition but that really doesn't mean a lot when im able to stick all the photos i like on it, it allows me to create access and store every document i've ever needed to, and has enabled me to have multiple tabs (usually between 3 & 6) running simultaneously with no complications. I have had laptops before which are hot like a frying pan on your leg, but i can comfortably place this between me & my eldest with no worries at all.
Bad points are that the keys don't light up, and no numbers along the top but no traditional number pad to the right hand side, the sound as with all laptops, would need boosting with external speakers to get a real quality sound. Finally it comes with Vista, which many don't like - myself included, this can be changed.
After much searching and review reading, I chose this laptop. I wasn't disappointed! It comes with Windows Vista (which I was a little uncertain of at first, as I'd heard bad reports) and has enough memory and processing power to run the majority of programs. The initial start-up procedure was a little long winded, but that's down to Microsoft I presume as you need to set up Vista with your preferences, etc.
Once up and running I installed Office and was soon happily writing in Word. I was a little curious to see how well it would cope with a game or two, so copied over World of Warcraft from my PC. Once I was logged in, I was surprised to find that it actually handled the game better and faster! I'm now looking for a decent wireless mouse as controlling my character is a little difficult using the touch pad!
Storage is plentiful and the sound from the built in speakers is good. The screen is excellent and graphics are crisp and well defined.
Connecting to my wireless network was a breeze and I was soon happily surfing the net.
It also comes with a built in webcam, useful for online conferencing and video chat.
An excellent, good quality laptop.
It has to be said that Toshiba are really efficient when it comes to laptop computers because they are great laptops at bargain prices. This laptop has great specs for the money and is ideal for anyone that is new to laptops or even for someone that uses them for work purposes.
When purchasing a laptop computer you need to decide what the laptop is going to be used for and then you must decide if the spec suits your needs.
The first atrribute that must be looked at is the amount of hard drive space because this will determine how much space you will have to store files such as pictures, documents, videos, etc. This laptop has a decent size hard drive as it has 250 GB of storage which is fine for casual use.
Next i always look at the amount of RAM that is available and this Toshiba has 2 GB of RAM; again very impressive as this will allow many programs to run at the same time so multiple tasks can also be completed at the same time.
Finally I look at the capabilities of the disc drive because I tend to burn CDs/DVDs. This Toshiba laptop again is impressive as it has a multi disc drive which allows any CD/DVD format to be burned and played on this particular laptop.
As long as a laptop has these three important components it will more or less be gauranteed to be a decent laptop and this one definitely does not disapoint.
I must of got a couple of bad ones of these then the first one the screen went very dull after a week and the Toshiba tech was no good at all returned a replacement arrived 10 days later which lasted 2 weeks and the hard drive started makeing a noise and this had to go back battery poor screen quallity good and keyboard layout good.
I started my search for a laptop to make doing student work easier, as well as to stop squabbling over the home computer; and I absolutely love it.
I'll be honest and say I am very fickle. I spent months sifting through reviews without coming to a decision- the main reason I bought this laptop was the £500ish deal with £100 cashback from Toshiba, but now I have the laptop I see that as just an added bonus to a great all-round package.
It is far better than any other computer I've ever used- the speed is incredible, the screen is crisp, the keboard is excellent. I also think it is beautiful, as laptops go, with all the perfect dimensions.
The weight is fine; I should know- I walk the mile and back to college and back- along with a thick text-book and a folder, and it doesn't bother me at all. On a similar note, the laptop is VERY sturdy-and it should be, as a Toshiba.
I also think the software included is great, there isn't too much to slow the system down- as with many other computers, just enough to be interesting and run the gadgets like the webcam and to store pictures.
I would certainly recommend this laptop to a student as it meets my needs perfectly. I am also very impressed with the Toshiba brand.
I have these as part of my Job. We tend to downgrade these to XP using a supplied downgrade disc. The laptops are of excellent build quality, and very rarely go wrong. the hard disc has plenty of space, screen is crystal clear, and speed is more than adequate. Battery life is good lasting roughly 2 Hours of constant use before you are needing to recharge. coming with 1GB ram they are more than capable of running most software, as long as your not wanted to play the VERY latest games.
My only gripe would be the keyboard on this and indeed previous models of the Satellite this has been a week point (and working in a school you get to know all the week points of the machines) with them being VERY prone to loosing keys or infact the whole white key connector coming off.
The wireless cards in these machine have improved enormously in these machines and now wireless range has improved.
