I bought this laptop for my husband for a reasonable price a few years ago after his old laptop simply decided to stop turning on at all. On a budget, I looked long and hard for a good laptop that wouldn't set me back too much money and this is what I bought.
After all these years, the battery life is still great, providing at least 3 hours. It has a big 250gb hard drive which is enough for most users photos and videos.
There are Three USB ports and nice big screen which is clear and easy to read
Unlike some laptops, this is light and not too big and doesn't get too hot on your laptop.
It comes with webcam and you can tell it has great build quality, as I've dropped it more than once and it's still running.
Speakers are awful, really quiet and tinny and I have to use plug in speakers to watch any films or TV. The keyboard is a good size, but not full size. Despite the 2gb ram it is often not enough to run games or to run a virus scanner with other programmes without slowing the whole system down.
The graphics are average, which is fine if you aren't a gamer, but it can cause problems with top end games. And although the screen is big and clear it awful in sunlight, you can't see anything for the glare.
All in all it is a good laptop, it is still running after a few years, it can be a bit slow at times, but it has held up well through constant use. For the price I think it is a very good buy and if you upgrade the RAM it would work better. As my husband mainly uses his laptop for watching films and iplayer, and playing games, more RAM would be useful as would better graphics. He also has to use speakers if he wants to watch films due to the poor speaker quality. But overall, it's a great quality laptop, with only a few flaws.
I should clarify.... Overall, this laptop is quite reliable. I was given it by my work brand new about 3 months ago. It is still pretty quick and functioning well. Internet explorer does crash regularly, however I view this as a fault of the software, not the hardware!
I do have a few complaints with it. Mainly, the mouse buttons. I tend to use the 'tapping the mouse pad' method of clicking rather than the buttons, so in the time that I've had the laptop the mouse buttons haven't (comparitively) been used very often. However about a month into my use, the left mouse button began to stick, and is REALLY ANNOYING when you're trying to edit things or whatever. The only way to unstick it seems to be to bash it unceremoniously until it comes loose! Right mouse button hasn't been bad, but it still feels flimsy and could possibly go the same way as the left.
One other little thing that annoys me - when the battery is running low, the laptop emits loud beeping noises as well as an alert on-screen. I don't really need a further function to lower battery energy when I've already had a screen alert!
I have had this model for nearly 4 months now and have mixed feelings about it. The keyboard is great, offering you room to type as normal without accidently hitting the nearby letter, but the mouse buttons have, in my opinion, i very cheap feel to them. Sometimes they just wont respond to your double clicking, which can become very frustrating at times.
The large screen is just about right - not too big, not too small. It offers very good resolution which combined with Windows 7 works very well indeed. there is a webcam just above the centre of the screen too which is a common feature of many laptops today but is a very useful one if you enjoy web conversations such as MSN Messenger.
The system is also very fast, offering 2ghz of Processing power and 1GB of RAM, which is great for writing documents, listening to music and surfing the internet, but please be aware this laptop will not be any good for gaming! The video card is quite good, but combined with the average amount of RAM and CPU power it can make High Quality videos lag a little bit at times.
The Speakers are quite good too, they are a lot louder than a lot of other laptop brands, offering a less 'tinny' sound to them aswel.
There is also a lot of storage available, with the 160GB Hard-disk. You will struggle to fill this up in a rush i can assure you.
The great thing about this laptop is you get lots of connections available to you. it is very easy to connect to a wireless network with the built in Wifi, and offers HDMI output too, so you can stream videos off the internet straight to your HD television!
There are more than enough USB sockets (3) and there is also a card socket for your camera photos, hidden discreetly next to the volume control at the front of the computer. Perhaps the volume shouldnt be controlled from there because if your using the laptop on your errm.. lap.. then it can be unnecessarily fiddly to adjust.
Finally the battery life is very good, unlike a lot of laptops that i have used in the past!
Overall this laptop is great value, with lots of features and powerful enough to run Windows 7 effectively. The only thing i would change is the appearance of the laptop, but thats me being picky.
This Toshiba laptop is fast, effective and fun. Windows 7 is a great feature and suits the up-to-date look, design and general feel of this laptop.
The 15.6" widescreen monitor is the prefect size. The keyboard is the same size as a standard keyboard, which is a great bonus, as I find most laptops have a smaller keyboard.
The only general problem / concern I have with this laptop is in regards to the mouse pad. The buttons are, at first, difficult to get used to as you need to apply different amounts of pressures to your click depending on where your fingers are. The closer you are to the other button, the easier it is. The further away, much harder.
The speakers built into this laptop are of decent quality, however for a louder sound, I would think about eternal speakers as the Toshiba ones aren't very loud.
The laptop comes with a built in webcam and microphone, making video calling even easier. The webcam also provides a little extra feature with facial recognition, which is easy to set up and use.
With three built in USB hubs, it and the sheer reliability of this laptop, I would feel confident having my printer, phone and iPod plugged in at the same time, as this handy little laptop is great for multitasking.
