... This has been solved by waiting an extra 10 seconds for the network to connect! The laptop also has only 3 USB ports, but I solved this with a USB hub from poundland. The laptop works the way any XP laptop would, and is good for word processing, internet browsing, listening to music and watching DVDs. The laptop has a good processor, and lots of memory, so can cope with multiple programs and games being opened at the same time. This laptop was bought for me to go to university, and it does a very good job. When it was first turned on it was very fast, and had everything set up ready for me. Initially I thought it was quite loud, but I don't notice that anymore. In the six months I have had it I have been very impressed, both by its speed, despite having a lot of music and some DVDs on it, and reliability. The only issues I have is that if I attempt to open internet explorer before the network has connected when the computer is turning on (ie. being impatient) the computer refuses to load any programs for a few minutes.
