Advantages: Crisp copies, very quiet, hibernate to awake in seconds

Disadvantages: Paper tray comes out of the back making it a larger than some may like!

I have now owned three different Brother Laser printers and I have certainly never regretted the day I obtained my HL-1230. I find it good for small and medium size jobs, while I have used an HP4 for my large jobs. (Maybe more on another review later for the HP.)

Overall, great for jobs other than high volume office use as it is not super fast normally putting out about 10-12 pages per minute depending on what you are printing. This is the average for the high quality (600x600dpi). You can print photo details, but alas not in colour. The quality of the print can be varied to safe on toner which overall is not cheap. The machine when I got it came with 2MB of onboard ram, but for anybody desiring a little more, I would recommend the HL-1240 which puts out 14ppm and has 4MB of ram.

Technical support has always been satisfactory with Brother products and I really have nothing to complain about. I have never had any problems with my machine with its ease of maintaining and not hard to find consummables. This is not a huge overhead cost as to keeping it going, but you will find that you can purchase toner cartridges for £50+ pounds and this will last you for up to 5000 copies, but again this would depend on the type of work you are trying to accomplish.

In conclusion, if I were to sum up what I think of Brother and in particular the HL-1230, I would say that it is a really nice compact machine. My only regret with it is that it does not handle my big jobs. It is very quiet and doesn't take up much room on the desk. The newer models or upgrades are now available, but if there is any similarity in the new ones to what you find in this one, I will continue to keep buying Brother Laser Printers!
