This is simpy the best value for money network printer out now for small/home offices. Setup of the printer was relatively simple, only downpoint is main documentation is on CD. A quicksetup poster is provided though. But it's nice to keep a manual by the printer for quick reference, rather than having to find and load the CD. But you could always print out the manual now! The driver is fairly good, although the need for two seperate drivers on Windows is not clearly explained anywhere. 1 for PCL and 1 for Postscript. Yes, this printer does Postscript too!! The driver also allows multipage printing or poster printing. Network control of the printer is simple via a web interface, or a control panel in Windows. But the ability to kill jobs is lacking, often requiring hard reset when needed. The printer is fast, data transfer over 10mbps network is great, but 100mb is supported too. Warmup from sleep takes about half a minute and individual pages near 10ppm in real life. The printer could use a memory upgrade from the 4MB. Fortunately it uses industry standard simms, so this is not an expensive proposition. It now looks like the 12mb version is only 20 pounds more at Dabs, so i recommend you go for that one. Quality is great for text, with some slight banding on large graphics. The only real worry about this printer is the running costs are slightly higher than normal office lasers, but not really any more than budget lasers. The only other improvement would be an lcd display on the printer rather than just a few LEDs. Overall, What other printer offers network capability, postscript, speed and quality for #310
The HL-1270N is designed to print up to 12 ppm, includes a built-in print server, PostScript Level 2 emulation (BR-Script 2), 4MB of standard memory and an optional additional 250-sheet paper tray for a total paper capacity of 500 pages. The HL-1270N is a complete, network-ready business printer for small workgroups who need many of the features found in more expensive printers. It is designed to excel in mixed language environments and it is upgradeable to 36MB.
