I have had this printer for several years. It has been working reliably for me, always producing good looking print output, in the limits of 600dpi of course. I used it with XP and now also with Mac OS 10. No problems. The toner seems to never run outThe cartridge seems to go on forever. Unbelievable!Overall, this is a great printer that is very economical.
We have owned the brother HL-1430 laser printer for around two years and have not had any problems with it. Mr H brought the printer home from the office as they were disposing of it and he thought that it would be great for printing black and white documents off as replacing the black cartridge in our ink jet printer was becoming quite an expensive hobby.
In the two years that we have owned the printer we have never had to replace the toner cartridge. To replace the cartridge would be relatively cheap as you can get compatibles for around £20 and considering that the black ink jet cartridges were costing us around £5 every month I think this is a bargain.
When Mr H brought the printer home there were no leads or software discs, that was easily remedied as the printer plugs in to the pc tower using a parallel port or an USB lead. We use the USB as this was the lead we had plenty of. As for the software Mr H went to the brother website and downloaded the drivers directly on to the pc. We have networked the printer with all the desk top pc's and laptops in the house and it meets the demands of the family perfectly.
It is very simple to load the printer with paper you open the paper draw that is located at the front of the printer, it holds around 250 sheets of laser printer paper, close the draw and away you go.
The printer is not very technical and so far nothing has gone wrong, there are lights on the front that light up for a paper jam or if the paper has ran out, there is also a light the indicates if the toner is running out and underneath these is a button to press once you have sorted out the problem. There is also an on/off switch located on the left hand side towards the back; this is a little awkward to get to if the printer is positioned next to something else. The printer also goes into power save mode if it is not used for around 5 minutes but will happily boot up and set off printing as soon as you send your document to print.
The printer is a bit noisy but not intolerable and prints off documents very quickly.
The main use in our household is for printing off information from websites and the children's school work. I can happily say that the printer has saved us a lot of money and if the place you work happens to be disposing of one as I think they are a bit outdated now I would try and get it if I were you.
I've had a look on the internet and found them for sale on ebay for £30, so if you do a lot of document printing at home I would say they are a good investment as toner cartridges and replacement drums are readily available on Amazon.
I've not put any technical details on as there are a lot of them but a quick internet search should bring them all up if you are interested.

I have had this great printer for over 2 years now and have had no problems so far. I use the printer only 3 or 4 time a week and have still not had to change the toner it came with. I decided to purchase a laser printer as my 2 previous inkjet printers did not perform as expected and was proving expensive to replace the cartridges. I use this printer to print word documents and emails, compared to other laser printers the HL 1430 is great value for money for what I need. The printing speed is good and also very easy to install on windows xp. If I have not used the printer for a while and printing a long document it takes a while to warm up but will then print at its consistent good speed. Overall I have been very happy with the printer for the last 2 years and is great value for money.
