Advantages: Speed, Quality of print, Low price for a laser
Disadvantages: Bad for mortgage lenders, Prints incorrectly from MapPoint, Prints incorrectly from Visual manufacturing
The Brother HL-1440 Laser printer is an excellent printer for personal or business use. Printing is fast and sharp. Installation under Windows XP is as easy as plugging the printer in. Windows XP has native drivers for this printer so it instantly recognizes the printer and installs it. You will have more problems unwrapping the printer than you will have setting it up. I have however run into a few problems with software applications along the way. If you are planning on running this laser printer under Windows XP and you happen to run Microsoft MapPoint, or Visual Manufacturing, you are going to run into problems. These two applications print incorrectly when using the Brother HL-1440 drivers. Characters are upside down and reversed. Other applications may also produce the same results. You fix the printing problem by using the HP LaserJet 6L drivers instead of the Brother drivers. I have not yet found a version of the Brother Printer driver that works correctly with these programs. Simply remove the Brother printer and then click on Add Printer. From here you want to move through the windows making sure that you uncheck the box to have windows automatically detect your printer. If you leave this checked, windows will find the printer and install its native drivers. Once you get to the window that lets you specify your printer, select HP and then HP LaserJet 6L from the list. That?s it. You will no longer see a Brother printer installed on your computer, but you will see an HP LaserJet 6L. Simply print with this printer and all is fine. I have noticed nothing different when using the HP driver instead of the Brother driver. Additionally, this printer really should be skipped by any one who is working in the home lone industry. This is because of the many different formats, software applications, and services that these companies use. Every different company is using a different method of formatting and transmitting documen
ts through out the entire process. I have personally experienced this problem with the Brother HL-1440, in this industry. I now run an HP although my Brother still works perfectly for most things. I would highly recommend this printer to you is you are looking for fast, sharp printing at a low price.

- 08/02/04 I noticed that Windows XP have an update for Brother printer drivers - don't know if this will cure your problem! I don't use either of the programs you mention, and don't work for the mortgage industry, but I have not experienced any problems printing from Word, Excel, Paintshop Pro, MS Publisher, Mathcad, our own software or a number of OU applications running on my machine. |

- 01/02/04 I appreciate the need for a laser, but I have a Canon i850 inkjet printer (also reviewed on dooyoo) which is excellent. It has many of the advantages of a cheap laser, with crisp output, great speeds and is designed for small business output. Printing costs are also half that of comparable HP/Epson printers. And you get the added advantage of colour/photo ouput and a much smaller footprint.

- 29/01/04 Owning the brother's previous model of this lazer printer, I appreciate how important it is to know about the possible pitfalls and teh fact that brothers own drivers can be very troublesom, I would however have like to see just a little technical info..sheets per min etc, and something about the price/performance compared to other manufacturers and possibley a little something on the toners,
cheers
