      A nice home or small office budget laser printer

      - Introduction -

      The Brother HL-6180DW is one of the best Mono printers currently available on the market, over the last few years Brother has become more present throughout homes and businesses throughout the UK due to the strong quality of build, consistent performance and overall low running costs.

      The HL-6180DW is based on its earlier release of the HL-5450DN, operating with the same print engine and effectively the same quality and speed of print as its predecessor, there are however a few new added extra's in to this model which does uniquely make this version quite more admirable than the previous of which consists of; Wifi availability to enable wireless printing over a home or shared work network, Wifi can also be interlinked with a switch or router to enable printing via ethernet connection or via a LAN, the latest release also offers more storage space for Paper saving time in paper refills and also boasts to be more cost effective in terms of printing in comparison to any other within its range.

      The new storage tray stores approximately 550 sheets of plain paper at once with 500 sheets being stored in the main tray and an additional excess tray which can hold up to 50 pages, An additional 500 sheet draw can also be purchased for extra storage and less maintenance.

      - Setup & Installation -

      This printer is designed and built to be future ready; the core highlights of this release is the ability to print without being next to your printer. At home and in business now its not always logical that the printer can be with you in your surroundings often due to limited space, for example in retail stores documentation may be printed from a front end till and received via a printer in the back-office. Without the use of Wifi this would incur a mess of trailing network cables, possible holes in walls and all in all costing time and labour so if your intended use is to be using this device wire-free then this product is definitely a good starting point to be considering. In addition to the integrated Wifi the printer also offers wire-free printing via range of other methods including Mobile Printing with smartphones via Airprint, Google Cloud Print and recently Brother have introduced a new Mobile App for wireless printing.
      Isn't it nice that technology is finely getting easier to use and understand rather than more difficult like much other newly released gadgets.

      - Speed & Processing -

      The printer is a Laser based unit which in a nutshell means that the printer transfers ink magnetically via the Toner as oppose to traditional style Ink Cartridges, this is a positive factor for several reasons;

      1. Overall print speed is dramatically faster than that of any Inkjet within a similar price bracket.
      2. Toner Ink lasts much longer than Inkjet Ink, and even when its left standing for a while the Toner can be shaked to break up particles which will allow further print runs even when running low.
      3. It is also possible to earn money back from your old Toners by recycling them with the appropriate companies who will offer you some change for you back pocket from your old Ink container. Now if that isn't smart I don't know what is..

      The unit prints at a consistent rate of 42 Pages Per Minute which has an increase of 2 Pages Per Minute in comparison to the earlier release.

      - Appearance, Swag & Operation's -

      The unit is a modern metallic silver design with a medium grey surface at the top, with a small screen to the top left of the unit and a range of controls, easy access to the toner by lifting the cover at the front, the unit has air ventilation on the side panels to keep the unit cool. The unit takes around 8.5 seconds in order to receive the print file and begin processing the Job this includes a 1 second warm up delay required to charge the ink prior to printing.

      - Quality Of Print -

      We have to remember that although this is a laser printer it is also limited to mono capability which limits how good our final prints will be, you will have no issue with print quality of text and standard image files however don't expect to print HD photo's and receive the same quality of print as the image. There is nothing inadequate with the quality of print however certain productions will appear a lot better quality than others, these tests are all based on what your printing. So it would be worth making a list of what you actually need your printer for and decide whether mono or colour is the best option and then decide whether you can deal with a wired connection or if you'd prefer to go wireless which effectively is the main difference between this and its previous.

      In conclusion, If you print a fair bit and are in search of a new printer then this is possibly the perfect investment for you, this unit is currently retailing at just over £200 and you should expect to receive a new toner for this price which should serve you up to 12,000 mono prints of text. This type of printer is aimed at the heavy home user or small business owner. Whatever your printing requirements, wherever you need to print, consider Brother for reliable long lasting printers which inevitably will save you £££'s in the long run.

      I will give this a good look back over and add any more detail to anything that I may have missed out.
