Brother HL-1050: ... even good enough for rough drafts. Printer does not work on a parallel port with XP. Needs a USB. Communication errors occur too often. 	Brother HL-820 ... bought my Brother Laser printer about 3 or so years ago. I wasn't sure if it was worth bothering getting a laser printer in the first place, but my wife was doing her Phd and would have to print out her thesis and about 10 trees worth of other stuff. Initial Cost: The initial cost of the printer was excellent. At the time it was pretty new to the market and about the cheapest you could get. Refills: Having heard of people getting stung before for very high toner and ink cartridges on cheap printers I had a look at the costs before I bought the printer. 	Brother HL 1440 ... drums are supposed to be super-environment-friendly and last for 100,000 pages. Sadly, this proved not to be the case. After our fourth drum at a total of only 60,000 pages, the first printer was out of guarantee and we looked around for something else. Cost is of course important, but to us, print quality is a number one concern. After comparing lots of print-outs in PC World, we opted for a Brother HL-1250. This printer ran wonderfully for a year, but when the drum needed replacing it turned out that we could buy a brand new Brother HL-1440 for just £20 more than the cost of a new drum (the drums have come down in price since then).
