Advantages: print quality is fantastic
Disadvantages: poor print speeds, regular jams, loud, bulky
As Communications Manager for a large NGO my team and I are called upon to produce large amounts of leaflets and publications for conferences, seminars and internal meetings. A decision was taken by those over me to kit my department out with HP Color LaserJet 2605dn printers, a decision I rue to this day and will continue to do so until I can either arrange for them to be stolen. That is of course a joke, but I really want them gone and more functional, better performing printers installed to make the life of me and my colleagues more bearable.
I will try to explain the problems we have experienced to date on top of the basic flaws with this equipment,
1. It is larger than the previous model - 40cm high, 40cm wide and 45cm deep. It takes up far too much space. We have four of these printers and to be honest it makes our office look cluttered and due to the weight of them (20kg) they have to be positioned at the end of desks which leads to reduced desk space and an increase in complaints due to the noise that they make (32 decibels according to our Health & Safety Inspector).
2. Printing speeds are poor - we are required at times to print 5,000-10,000 leaflets in colour and the printer only prints in colour a maximum of 10 pages per minute. Timing the printer, it actually only produces 7 pages per minute in colour. When producing black and white leaflets it should print 12 pages per minute but in reality it only prints 9. This means that prior to any major jobs being conducted we have to calculate print timings.
3. Breakdowns - the printer is completely unreliable. It jams on a regular basis (at least 3-4 times a day per printer) and takes at least 10-15 minutes to restart once a jam is cleared. If the jams occur when we are rushed one after the other we struggle to complete our work plans.
To try and balance out this opinion I will speak highly of the print quality, it is first class; however, at the sped with which it prints I would expect nothing less.
After looking at the purchase price online (£350), I would have to say that the HP Color LaserJet 2605dn represents poor value for money and I would not recommend it for use in an office whatsoever. It just is not up to the job.
I hope this is helpful.
Summary: Never, ever, consider buying one!

- 16/05/09 I hcomment on this as an IT Technician. this printer is exceelent, however for your needs the printer is useless. But that is not at the fault of the printer, that is at the fault of your IT department supplying you with essentially a low end production printer, i.e. one to print maybe 1000 pages - 2000 a day, for as you say needing 5000 to 10,000.
The printer should not be criticised for being put into a position it wasn;t built for. The tupe of printer you are after is in the 4000 series which i must add is far bulkier due to colour and capacit and needing a proper duplex unit and they cost considerably more i.e. £1000's. so to review this printer on the basis of it not working in your needs well its not supposed to, it would be like a person paying you to do open heart surgery then sueing you for not doing a good enough job. |
