The HP 2420 is a good printer with several nice features

The HP 2420 is a good printer with several nice features but also there is some worrisome aspects. Allow me to hit the good points first:

The printer is FAST. I'm changing an old HP printer (2100M) that claimed it might print 10 pages per minute (PPM). Maybe my old printer would hit 10 PPM if perhaps all I had it print was double-spaced text with zero graphics. But for almost any serious work, the printer was closer to 6 PPM. This new printer honestly flies. I've not timed it, but it has to be very close to the claimed speed of 35 PPM even when I give it pages along with some graphics. The printer is also quiet and also I like the power-saving sleep mode.

Installing the printer has been easy but I believe it is VERY important not to connect the printer into the computer until the install software tells you to do so. A few years ago I connected an HP printer to my computer just before I had installed the software that came up with the machine. Boy, was that a mistake! It took about 2 hours working with HP service people on the phone to repair the resulting problems. So, do NOT create this error. Also, if you really want to install the post-script drivers, you should use the custom install. The straight install puts just PCL drivers on your current computer.

The printer (and HP) does have several downsides. First, be aware that there is simply no cable included with the printer. And, if you wish to use a USB cable, be sure that you get the proper cable--one with an A and also a B head, such as the Belkin F3U133-06. Second, on the 1st day when I was printing a downloaded pdf document, I received a very cryptic error message about a issue with the firmware. I was never ever able to determine what exactly went wrong, however after shutting down and restarting the printer, the file printed OK. So far I have not had a recurrence, but I stay nervous. Third, the printer arrives with 32MB of RAM. I'd like to increase the memory but the manual doesn't give enough details for me to be comfortable ordering anything but the vastly over-priced HP memory. 4th, at least for me, HP's "Automatic check" to up-date the drivers (on the HP website) is an "Automatic failure." I have hardly ever succeeded in using this service. Finally, if humidity will cause the paper you are using to be curved after it is printed, you run the risk of making a mess. The curved paper will stack up and then be thrown to one side or the other off of the printer. Because the machine is so fast, this can happen quickly.

I don't want to give the incorrect impression about this printer. Yes, I listed a number of drawbacks, but the only one that really seriously worries me is the error message I received. And after 2 weeks, I have seen this message only once. So, I think the 4 star assessment I gave is accurate.
