Not for the family but a great office printer. If you are looking for a medium size, medium to heavy-duty capacity black and white laser print solution for your office, than perhaps you should spend some time looking into this product. The first thing worth mentioning about this product, is of course its versatility. The HP 5000N is capable of being connected directly to your computer using either Parallel - 36 pin Centronics (IEEE 1284B), or Serial - 9 pin D-shell (EIA 574/232) as well as capable as connecting to a network using the built in 10/100 print server. Furthermore to the above, if you were set to install one of those in your office, you can rest assured that you will have it up and running at the shortest time possible, thus ensuring that you can start the printing and using the unit quite soon after it has been purchased and delivered to your office. The unit itself is quite versatile as far as the operating system supported (running under either of IBM OS/2, Microsoft Windows 95,Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0,UNIX, DOS or Sun Solaris. Furthermore, the unit is capable of handling a variety of paper formats and media including Envelopes, Paper (Standard Cut Sheet) and any general paper media up to 11" x 17" in size. The printing tray has quite fair capacity of up to 1100 sheet of paper, with the ability to purchase the add on optional paper tray that will handle up to additional 2000 pages of paper. The quality of the print is a stunning 1200DPI at a speed of up to 16PPM (based on a combined estimated print coverage of 20% to 25%). The unit comes equipped with 8 MB of onboard memory (expandable to 100MB, thus ensuring that you will have enough resources to complete even the most demanding printing project your company might require. As far as quality of workmanship and paper handling capability, this unit is quite precise and capable of good paper handling resulting
in unit rarely or almost never jamming or otherwise slowing down due to a poor paper handling. Combined with a 1 year warranty (expendable to a longer periods of time through Hp’s extended warranty program) and a toll free technical support line and free web based support, you can rest assured that you are setting a long term and worry free solution for your office, once you get and install this product (with a regular maintenance as prescribed by HP). You definitely will not be disappointed with this product.

This product was purchased by me about 9 months ago for use in the workplace. The first thing I found when it was delivered was definately the size and of course how heavey this printer was. (Make sure you remove all the trays before trying to lift this printer) Make sure you have a large place to put this printer before purchasing it. It boasts four trays, I think at least one allows for duplex printing although i've never used this feature. I found that its printing speed was also extreally fast , one standard text page maybe took 5-10 seconds maximum. This printer boasts many settings which can be found in the LCD display, the settings are very similar to its previous model (4000N) so is quite easy to set up in the long run. eg network settings etc... There are a few additional setting built in In conclusion apart from its size this printer is an excellent choice for business use.
