Were do I start with the HP Laserjet 5P, Iv'e had this printer for almost 15 years now. I actually got it second hand when I purchased my first PC and its still running like it was brand new. I have had no problems with the printer apart from low memory due to high graphical printing, which I upgraded 2 years ago. The HP Laserjet 5P is a good size for any office environment, it is abit dated now and there are other laser printers which can be used instead of this, but saying that people do still prefer using this printer in offices and even schools due to it being virtually unbreakable. Below is a list of features and specification of this printer:
- Printer type is laserjet black and white
- Connection type is via parallel port
- Max resolution is 600 dpi x 600 dpi
- Print speed is up to 6 pages per minute
- Standard memory 2MB installed can be upgraded to 50MB max.
- Printer cartridge can print up to 4000 pages (HP original cartridge)
- Software/Drivers included although windows will easily recognise it even if you don't have the drivers.
- Infra Red for wireless printing
- Colour of the printer is white although mine looks creamier colour
- 15.7"(W) x 17.5"(D) x 7.9"(H)
As I mentioned earlier I upgraded my printer's memory from the standard 2MB to 16MB. This was very easy to do as I followed instruction from the HP website from there FAQ/help sections. The printer is capable of printing more graphical content now without windows saying printer out of memory. The memory can be purchased from any PC store or the internet and prices will vary. I actually got mine from Ebay at a very cheap price.
The actually printer itself performs very well I haven't had any problems with it apart from the memory and some minor cleaning inside. Cleaning the printer inside is easy, you simply pop the lid open by pressing the button on the side and lift the toner cartridge out. Now you simply get a brush and clean every where inside, its usually just dust stuck around rollers and the paper feed area that's all.
The toner cartridge is brilliant, lasts up to 4000 page prints if you're using the original HP toner. If using a compatible toner that number can be around 3000. The Toner cartridge lasts ages depending on how much you print and how detailed or graphical the print is. The HP original toner is still pricy but worth it, you can get it for around £50-£60. A compatible toner will cost around £20-£30. I bought a compatible toner a few times, some are good some are total waste of money as they mess up very quickly and the print is no were near as sharp as it should be. I try to stick to the HP original toner if I can get hold of it cheap from Ebay or a local PC shop.
Overall I would highly recommend the HP Laserjet 5P if you require a black and white printer for home use or office. You can use it along side an inkjet colour printer and switch between them when needed to. It much more economical printing black and white with the laserjet 5P than it is printing black and white with a laserjet. The printer costs around £80-100 now, you can get it cheaper second hand. When it was first released it was around £300-£500! I think I got mine for around £100 back then.
