Samsung CLP 680ND
Advantages: High quality mono and colour prints; easy set-up; duplex printing; very quick
Disadvantages: Big; rather noisy printing; expensive toner cartridges
Let me start by saying that I wouldn't recommend this as a home network printer. Sounds negative, doesn't it? Not quite. I would, in fact, recommend it whole-heartedly for a small office and even a home office and here is why (for both statements).
The Samsung CLP-680ND is a colour laser printer that works quite well. It is very quick and both mono and colour productions are stunning. This is particularly impressive when you consider how generally so-so colour laser production tends to be. The colours are vivid and faithful to the original. Mind you, don't expect to get the sort of results you get from a quality Canon inkjet printer but the claim of "vibrant and vivid colours" you find in the sales-blurb is not far off the mark. The most impressive qualities of the printer are the speed, the print quality (both mono and colour), the duplex printing and the easy set-up including networking. My slight gripe with the duplex is the way it does the printing which is external. It prints one side first and as the paper comes out, it is pulled back in to print the other side. This works well (so far!) but it inevitably slows down the process. I'm also concerned that the mechanism may be vulnerable to malfunction thereby robbing the printer one of its trump features.
So why don't I recommend it for the home? Well, I was taken aback by the size. It is quite big. It is also not the quietest printer. If space is at a premium or if you have your computer/printer set-up in the living room then this is definitely not for you. I have, however, to say for a home office, this looks like the perfect work-horse. Like most colour laser printers however, beware of the replacement toner cartridges prices. They aren't cheap.
Summary: Print results are impressive, a good workhorse for a small office but may have high running costs.
