Samsung ML 1210
Advantages: very cheap to run, very reliable, fast print spreed, prints on many size and type of paper.
Disadvantages: over time it has developed a tendency to jam.
This is quite an old printer now, but is still a good one. It might be harder to get hold of as it only appears to be available in the second hand market, and is available on sites like ebay for around £40.
I have a fair amount of experience with the Samsung laser printers. When I was working as a teacher, we had these in all our classrooms and in the office, and they saved quite a lot of our department budget as rather than photocopying our worksheets, we tried to digitalise as much as we could, and then they could be printed out instead. We did have to budget for the toner cartridges that these machines use, but a toner replacement these days for this model is about £21. In the time that we have owned this printer, we have replaced the toner once, and it has been used rather a lot.
My husband had a friend who was selling this printer, and as we were at that time spending a lot on me printing out my lesson plans and resources, we snapped his hand off for it. I can't even remember what we paid him for it. Somewhere around £75 back in 2003.
The printer is really quite large, and unlike the models I used at work, it does not have an internal paper storage tray. I can leave paper stood up in portrait mode at the back of the machine, but I found that sometimes the paper would get a little curled around the top. This was then likely to create a jam. I just add paper when I want to use the printer. It can hold up to 150 sheets.
Paper can also be fed into the machine from the top manually. I have done this occasionally, but I prefer the just put it in the top and leave it method as this way only takes one sheet at a time.
As a teacher, this printer was very versatile for me. I could print out a class set of worksheets at a speed of 12 sheets per minute very easily. I could also print onto transparent sheets to display things on an overhead projector. This was of limited use though as I wanted to do colour images really and these were just black and white.
Of course, now when most teachers use interactive smart boards, as I did, you no longer need to have this facility.
The toner lasts a long time. I was printing out many sets of class worksheets as well as lesson plans and items such as cbeebies colouring sheets for my own children, and we have replaced the toner once in all those years of ownership. I know from my experience at work that when you think it is running low, if you open the front of the machine you can take the toner out and shake it gently from side to side to redistribute the toner, and you get a lot more use out of it.
The machine over the years has become a bit less reliable. Nowadays it jams very easily. It will only accept one piece of paper at a time being manually fed into it. Realistically, if I were still working, I could not manage with this printer any more as it can take a ridiculous amount of time for the first piece of paper to be sensed and fed into the printer. Once warm, it is a lot more reliable.
My husband is now keen to replace it anyway, but I like how cheap it is to run this printer compared to an ink printer. It is quite bulky, but it is stored away in the computer desk out of the way and out of sight so that doesn't bother me at all.
Samsung make good printers, and I recommend this version for home use as it is available cheaply, and I would also consider replacing this with a newer Samsung model as I know how good and reliable they are.
Summary: This has probably had its day now, but I have grown rather fond of it so I will keep it going.
