An excellent piece of kit, for quite a low price.

Before this model I had only dealt with Epson printers. Whilst their quality tended to be quite high, and the printers themselves (relatively) inexpensive, they had the awful habit of running out of ink. All of the time. At the worst possible times too! So aside from the inconvenience and stress of printing off essays from a library hours before their deadline, the printers ended up costing me a small fortune. So much for my savvy shopping eh?

After University and my Epson woes, I began work in an office which used Laser printers exclusively and they caught my interest. So when the time came to pick up another refill for my Epson I decided to throw the printer out with the cartridges and pick up a laser printer. Fortunately I was lucky enough to coincide my purchase with the release of the Samsung ML-1665.:

      Overview:
Well - it's small. Very small! But in today's clutter, that is only a good thing. It is very sleek, stylish and is very intuitive when it comes to it's hardware (there's only so many switches and hinges, and they are all pretty clear what they do). It has it's usb adaptor to connect with the PC and an AC plug - both of which are reasonably long to allow you to place it quite conveniently, this coupled with it's size make it a perfect desktop printer if you're space conscious.

      Pros:
It's Printing speed whilst just short of what is advertised is pretty healthy at around 15 pages per minute. The quality is always crisp when printing text out. It was easy to install, and if you ever lose the disk there's an option to get the drivers from Samsung's site.

      Cons:
There is a significant deterioration in quality when printing photos, and it often prints at a much darker setting than you may think. This can be fixed to an extent in it's menu's, but not completely.

      Cost of Refills?
Whilst the official cartridge to refill the printer is quite expensive, most printer shops offer cheaper third party refills. I normally get mine from Amazon, and end up spending in the region of £10-15. All have gotten a fair amount of mileage thus far and at a high quality, so I wouldn't approach the third party route with any trepidation.

      Is this printer for you?
Are you printing mainly text in a low to medium volume? If so then this product is certainly suited towards your needs. It is inexpensive to run for this type of use and it takes up a small area of space and looks quite aesthetically pleasing whilst doing so.
If however you're after a printer for graphics, images, or bulk volume you may wish to consider other models simply for your own convenience.

All in all - what it does it does well, but merely in a limited capacity.

      Very affordable,reliable little printer.

I was always used to printing on an ever reliable Espon colour all-in-one, which could copy and scan aswell as print so I was a little apprehensive when thinking of buying a laser printer. I was sick of prints coming out smudged and was reliably informed that Laser prints were much improved quality so opted for this particular printer. The result was amazing although only black and white , the quality and speed at which the sheets are done is very impressive. I use this Samsung for printing labels and could not afford to risk using a bog standard inkjet incase they came out smudged and blurry which would not give a very professional look to them.
I paid £49.99 and I'm pretty sure that is the standard price which to me is very reasonable and affordable, the ink toner however is rather expensive at around £45-50 a time. You can also now buy compatible toner cartridges but I can't say whether these work well or aswell as the official Samsung ones as I haven't yet had to replace the ink which is always a good sign, several months after buying it! Overall a very efficient, affordable printer if all you need is black and white and a professional look to your prints. Recommended.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Highly recommended

There's nothing worse than being handed a business document printed out in inkjet. It just looks amateurish and childish. Inkjets are geared towards school children who want to print out their course work and housewives who want to print out greeting cards. Anyone who wants to be taken seriously in the business world should invest in a laser printer.

Recently the tray mechanism in my Samsung laser printer stopped working properly so I was in need of a replacement. Searching on the internet, there seemed to be a lot of deals around especially for ink jet printers for next to nothing but for anyone accustomed to using a laser printer it's difficult to go back to using an inkjet.

Browsing on the internet, I eventually ordered the Samsung ML1665 from amazon for 50 GBP. Considering my last laser printer was samsung and broke I was a bit apprehensive about buying another Samsung however this was the cheapest laser printer available.

Upon taking the unit out of the box I was pleasantly surprised by how small the printer is. Compared to my previous samsung, the unit is extremely compact and looks more robust. The base of the unit appears to have a metal plate. Perhaps, this unit has a more durable tray mechanism however only time will tell since I only just bought it.

Samsung appear to have done without any of the wireless or network functions which appear to to popular with the inkjet printers. However, this isn't too much of a problem, since I connected the unit to my Linkstation via USB. The Samsung printer is available to any computer on the network.

The print quality is extremely good, as one would expect from a laser printer. There are no strange lines or print errors. Also, the unit can print extremely quickly.

While the printer itself is only 50GBP a replacement toner is around 40 GBP. Unfortunately, at the moment there are no 3rd party toners and I haven't found any toner refills available. However, this printer is still relatively new. Hopefully, cheap toner refills will be available soon.

For 50GBP, this is a very good printer. If you just want to print out documents in black & white I highly recommend this printer.
