I have a collection of printers in use in my house for various purposes, from brands such as Brother, Epson, Lexmark and HP. Therefore, I think I'm well placed to make a good, relevant review of a printer when I have so much to compare it to! The Xerox Phaser 3130 is my "everyday" printer for black and white documents. This means I use it to print letters or documents that aren't particularly important - e.g. if I want to print off a website page to refer to it. I think this printer is perfect for this type of printing because the quality is fine for text (e.g letters) but isn't as good as other printers in terms of resolution for printing images. The Phaser 3130 is a monochrome laser printer, so it uses toner rather than ink. Because it's monochrome (black and white) there is only one toner cartridge to replace - the black one! I usually pay around £50 for my replacement toner and rarely have to replace it more than once or twice a year. I find the quality of the print is excellent and the printer is solid and reliable. Unlike other printers, I haven't experienced a great deal of paper jams and, when I have, it's usually been my own fault for incorrectly inserting paper! All in all, this is a good, economical printer for black and white documents and it's worked easily without requiring a service for several years.
I bought this specifically to print lecture notes in black and white. This is a very cost effective printer. So far, I have yet to change the toner and it is still printing even after 2 years. It does print fast enough for me although it would be slow in comparison to those giant office printers.
The printer is rather basic. it doesn't print double sided unless you feed in paper manually so this could be a big deterrence to those who hates waiting for their print out or who hates wasting paper.
However, I find the quality of printing very good. Even when it is in draft mode, the words still come out clear and dark enough to read. (Draft mode prints in lower quality which saves toner).
Warning: do not use used paper in the printer. This causes dirt to accumulate on the inside of the printer, causing paper jams. I have a three year warranty on it so it was alright for me to take to the store for a cleaning but otherwise, it is not advisable to do so.
Xerox Phaser 3130 is a very good and affortable printer but it has a few minor problems. Start up time takes longer than average. At my office we have Samsung ML 1710 and HP 1018. For printing quality HP is a little better.
