Flymo Easi Glide 330VX
Advantages: Easy to use, no need for excessive emptying, easy to clean, efficient
Disadvantages: Bit pricey but worth the money
I have always been the one to help out in the garden when my Dad was cutting the grass, pruning bushes or cutting down branches off our slightly overgrown tree. Despite having an older brother, he preferred staying indoors and I was always an adventurous kid so liked doing work that was new and exciting (can you imagine I thought this was exciting) work. When I was younger and living in a house with a much larger garden than the house we have now, the lawn was 100m and pretty hard to maneuver, and the lawnmower of choice for us was always a gas guzzling petrol lawnmower. It was heavy for a 10 year old to push about and especially difficult when cutting around a tree that was a kind of feature point in the middle of my garden.
So when I grew older I told myself there was no way I would go back to petrol lawnmowers. Not only could I physically not turn them on alone (that was a job I had to call my Dad, or later my boyfriend out to help with) but it smelt, was loud and didn't always do a high quality job. So when shopping one day in Homebase, like a kind of fantastic lawn-cutting mirage, I noticed the Flymo Easi Glide 330VX hover mower and practically begged my Mum to buy it. By this point my Dad was too old and too lazy to keep up with the gardening so it was my sole responsibility, and as a pretty petite 5"2 teenager, I understandably struggled to maintain a nice garden. She gave in and we purchased the Flymo Easi Glide 330VX for around £80 on offer, which realistically isn't too much if you're prudent like me and care about the appearance of your garden. Plus the fact, the running of the machine is excellent and I have used it frequently for well over a year now without any issues, and I don't see that changing any time soon.
The item weighs about 9kg which is ideal for the casual gardener like myself. It is easy to maneuver, especially because of its lack of wheels as there is no 3 point turning and forth-back revving to really get the machine up and running. It really does glide across my lawn, leaving a pretty decent cut, although admittedly not as precise as when I used my petrol lawnmower, but I believe that is much more of a testament to the lower quality of grass I have at my new house, and the slight slope my garden has.
There is a kind of window that allows you to see how much grass has filled the box, which is useful as it means there is no longer the need to turn off the machine and lift up the lid to check for yourself. It also means I get the job done faster as I can quickly fill up the box, empty and keep going.
The cutting heights on this lawnmower range from 1-3cm, and I usually prefer the larger height. Previously I had enjoyed a much shorter cut, but since moving, and since using this Flymo, it is much easier to simply zip around the garden and re-do any bits you've missed, or parts that dont have the same quality of workmanship as other areas in your garden. I have tested out the lower measurement and find that it is a little too short for the type of grass I have (that is somewhat dry grass because of the way the sun constantly hits my lawn) and so perhaps this is something to consider when using.
The cable is 12m long which is of perfect length for those of you who have small, easy to navigate gardens. Personally, my garden now is what I would medium sized, and so I require an extension cable, especially because the centre of my garden now features a greenhouse, which means more cable is required to go all the way around it. Usually however, I think that the 12m would do me fine and so this is a decent amount for anyone with a small to mid sized garden.
It is important to clean the blades of your lawnmower if you want to ensure top quality cutting action, and keep your lawnmower running efficiently for as long as possible. To do this I simply use a brush and sweep of the excess grass left on the blades which only takes a few minutes, and then pop the grass into the box afterwards.
The grass collecting box has the capability to hold up to 12 litres of grass, which again is reasonable for a small to medium sized garden. I only ever tend to empty it a maximum of three times, unless I have allowed my grass to grow a little longer over the winter, as I don't trust cutting the grass with the soil still a little wet.
My only problem with the Flymo Easi Glide 330VX is that as a 1400 watt electric mower the cable sometimes does get in the way. Maybe this is because of my impatience, but I find that I need to sling the cable over my shoulder to ensure it doesn't accidentally fall under the mower itself. I'm not sure how this problem can really be improved however, as no matter how far away I throw the excess cable away to prevent this, it still ends up narrowly close to the mower and the blades. I think one way to combat this is simply to take a bit more time than usual to keep checking the distance and ensuring your safety, as this is obviously a lot more important than a neatly mowed lawn!
Overall, this is an excellent lawnmower and I am so glad we finally bought one. It does an excellent job at cutting alongside pathways also, which is great as previously I needed to use a strimmer afterwards to reduce excess grass on the edges of paths and nearing my fence. It is easy to use, even for beginners, and it doesn't take long to get to grips with. The instructions menu tells you exactly what you need to know (which is simply how to set up the machine, and how to turn it on to get started) and beyond that there really isn't more you need to know. Its great for smaller lawns, and is so simple and efficient. It is really a great buy and well worth the money, a lawnmower I would definitely recommend.
Summary: An excellent lawn 'hover' mower that leaves your lawn looking great
