With Christmas being just around the corner, why write a review about a lawn mower?
Well to put it simply, we (and by we I mean me) had left the grass out the front of our house to grow a little longer than usual. And also I had left it extremely late in the year to cut it, don't get me wrong it was cut regularly all through the summer but nearing the end we kind of forgot about it and it didn't get cut until Halloween week. It was one of the strangest experiences mowing the lawn with fireworks exploding overhead.
This electric lawnmower by Flymo has seen many a years use, we have it longer than ten years and that's some life for a modern piece of equipment. Most appliances big or small seam to pack it in much sooner than that and this old man looks like he'll last for a few more years to come.
This is the Flymo Turbo 330. It came in quite a large box, bigger than I expected. But once I opened it I realised why it was so big. The lawn mower is basically fully assembled and seeing it's not the smallest of mowers the box had to accommodate it. All I had to do was simply attach the handle to the back of the unit using two slide through pins, these can be removed to help with storing the mower in a more compact fashion. The power cable can also be removed but I don't like plugging it in and out every time I use it, as I worry the connection will become loose, so I tend to wrap it around the handle.
This looks like a hovercraft gliding over the lawn as all working parts are hidden from view underneath the orange frame. Before you start you'll have to adjust the cutting height of the unit. This is done by simply adjusting the height of the wheels, there is a little handle on each wheel to control the height from level one too level five, as with a hair trimmer one is for short and five is for long. It's best to set it to a longer setting rather than going straight to number one as this could scalp your lawn if it's any way uneven. I find two to be the best and safest setting to work with. But if you see it's not doing a good enough job, then lower the setting by all means. At least you'll have the option to do so, if you cut it too short it can't be undone until it grows back, so it's better to be safe than sorry when using for the first time.
There is also a little loop on the handle for the electric cable to be run through. This will help keep it safely away from the blades while in operation. But please don't take your mind off the lead just because of this loop always be safe and make sure the way is clear before you push the mower in any direction. At the top of the handle the main power controls can be found. There are two, long, orange, curved, easy to feel and use buttons / switches theses can be squeezed to start the blades. You must first press the safety switch in the centre of the handle, before these trigger like switches will work.
As I said this looks like a hovercraft as it almost silently glides over the grass, it really doesn't make that much noise at all. It will only grunt if it hits a particularly woody weed and with 1500W of power these don't even put up a fight for long.
The best thing about this mower over others we have owned in the past, is that it not only collects the grass cuttings it also compacts them into the hidden bin. This is so simple to empty and fills up less regularly as the grass takes up less room when compacted. You'll know when the bin needs emptying as they have a handy little way of telling you when it's full. There is a little orange ball in a clear chamber that rises to the top and is easy to see from standing distance.
Handy features and smooth looks aside, does it actually do a good enough job at cutting the grass?
Yes it does, it does more than a good job, the grass is cut evenly with no patches where the grass was too long and the blades just ripped it out from the root. There is also never any trailing long blades of grass that had been flattened by the mower and missed by the blades.
As I said at the beginning of this review, this old mower has lasted us many, many summers and thankfully he doesn't look like he'll will be retiring any time soon.
