Qualcast is a name synonymous with lawn mower production, and has built it's reputation on years of experience of building durable and easy to use machines which do the job you need. After moving house and ending up with a much bigger garden, it became clear that my electric flymo, while capable of a light trim from time to time, couldn't be relied upon to regular make a good job. After listening to my dad's recomendations and seeing he still had his manual rotary mower Qualcast after some forty odd years. I opted for the same brand.
However, instead of a manual blade mower which operates by movement, I opted for a petrol mower and took the plunge on a Classic Petrol 35s. And after two years I'm still very happy with it. I use it only every month or so, when the grass is damp, and in total it gets used no more than ten times a year. Now when you consider the outlay is over £500 you are probably scratching your head and questioning my sanity.
And you would be right. But I am buying this in the knowledge and perhaps a little hope that it is going to be around for a very long time. Decades hopefully. This maybe a little naive in todays modern world of items lasting for as long as their guarantee, but I believe there are still some companies that deliver quality and charge for it.
So a couple of other reasons why I don't use it too often First of all it is powered by a Kawasaki 3Hp 4 stroke engine which is loud and you don't want to be listening to it, or indeed smelling the lovely smell it produces. Secondley it weighs 38kg which means it can take some effort to get it to and from the gardens, but also when the weather is exceptionally warm, it will sink and cut too much grass, alomst digging a trench. That is not a warning that comes in the manual by the way, rather it was learnt from persoanl experience.
In addition, the bin has capacity for 58 litres of grass and the blade has a cutting width of 14inches. The height can be set in one of five positions from 10mm upto 35mm. The blade is cylindrical meaning it can for a scissor action when it connects with the bottom blade. The effect of this is that it will give you a much sharper cut. Think Lords Cricket Ground on the morning of the First Test of Summer.
Qualcast has a reputation for delivering quality albeit at cost. You could say they are the Aston Martin of lawnmowers. So far this model has given me no cause to doubt that assertion. This model and others like it are primarily for larger gardens. The benefit of not having to drag a cord around should be offset against petrol costs and weight. However, when used correctly and in the right situations, the results are spectacular. And hopefully they will be for many years to come.
A horizontally mounted cylinder of blades that cut against a fixed bottom blade for a superior scissor-like cut.
