Advantages: cheap, no engine or motor to maintain, no need to change blades
Disadvantages: a little slow on large areas
Five years ago I bought a small Flymo mower. It cost me just over $100 (Australian) (About £40 (English). It is a lovely bright orange colour, yes the colour is still nice and bright. There is no engine, so I don’t have to get it serviced, or buy it fuel. In Australia it has novelty value, most people have motor mowers, and as people walk past they stop to comment and have a chat, so my mower helps me to get to know my neighbours! They usually make comments about my getting exercise, which of course I do! Not only do I get exercise and therefore save money on gym membership, I also saved money on purchasing my mower, and continue to save it on its maintenance, since the odd drop of oil does not cost very much. The fact it is an old fashioned barrel shape rather than one with rotating blades means I do not have to change its blades, things ones will last for many years. Even though it is slower to use than a motor mower, the work is not hard, the mower is very light to push. I don’t have to yank at cords trying to start it like some motor mowers. While other mowers need new blades, I tighten a couple of screws. The only problem was in the handle, I’ve had to replace a couple of nuts and bolts there. It’s a great little mower for a small garden.
