Lego Duplo 5497: Play with Numbers
by milliesmum123 We have had Duplo for Millie since her first birthday but this particular set we only bought this Christmas. She is five so perhaps at an age where Duplo isn't a main priority, maybe she should be moving onto Lego but she loves the original set we have for her and we thought this one would really benefit her as her report from school ... said that she struggles to recognise numbers so anything to help aid her in that department has got to be a good thing. We bought it from Tesco for £15, this was reduced, I think it was originally £25. I'm not sure if I would have spent £25 on it but for £15 it was very good value for money. === Duplo === Duplo is lego designed for babies basically! It has been around so long that I know I had some when I was a baby, I still have vague memories of having played with it. It is large blocks of various shapes but that can all slot together. As well as blocks there are other features such as animals, doors, transport and so forth again all of these have the ability to be built on. It is always brightly coloured and you can buy different sets a bit like you can lego, I have seen a pet shop type set, basic sets with a variety of random blocks and other packs which are geared towards something particular. === This set === This set is called "play with numbers" this is because it is all centred around numbers but not in a way which completely dominates it, you can still treat this as normal lego and just use it to build or you can just focus on the numbered aspects it is completely up to you. Within this set you get lots of blocks, two flowers, a little truck, a person, a dog, a window and a little picket fence. This gives you scope to be able to build a house and garden or whatever you wish really! Millie likes to build castles! Now what makes this about numbers is that on 10 of the bricks you get a number in it's numerical form. These go from number 1 up to 10 and each numbered lock is a different colour which makes it easier to pick out. As well as these numbers you also get 10 blocks which have pictures on, each of these blocks have a different number of pictures for example 3 apples, 4 chicks and so forth. This means you can play along finding the number 1 and the 1 item, the number 2 and the two bunnies and so on. Although these blocks are different sizes and colours it doesn't matter, they can all slot together, you can put blocks on the back of the truck, put the fence on top of blocks, put the dog on top of a flower... whatever you like! They are all also completely interactive with the other Duplo sets you can get so this can just build upon your collection. === Education === Education wise you can learn so much from Duplo in general. When we bought our first Duplo set for Millie's first birthday she wasn't interested in constructing anything at that age but she did like to hold the pieces and practice picking them up and putting them in the tub. She would spend hours just tipping out all the blocks and putting them back in again, this taught her about holding things and throwing things too! We also would talk to her about them "Have you got a red block?" and so she would pick up on colours or "Have you got a big block?" so she would know about size. We did this without conscious thought really so helped her to learn without really focussing on it. Now that she is older she learns from Duplo in lots of ways. Her imagination is amazing, she will make all kinds of things, things that I wouldn't thought she would. This set really looks like you can make a house out of it or use the truck to carry things but she uses it to make things like towers just by putting as many bricks on top of each other as possible, she has apparently made a ship, a car park, a castle... anything she imagines she can make so it seems! It is funny to watch but also great to see her being creative. Sometimes she gets frustrated if she can't get the blocks to go exactly how she wants but she is learning to be patient and to keep trying or to adjust what it is she wants to do and again this is important to learn. The numbers side of things has helped her to recognise the 10 numbers on the blocks. We don't try to force this on her but in passing we may ask her to pass us a block with a particular number on and she enjoys picking it out and it's good to see that she is getting it right most of the time. We count the pictures on the pictured blocks too and then try to hunt out the block with that number on. This is a really good way to help children recognise numbers and do basic counting. === Fun === This is really fun. We have this out on a daily basis. Some days I'm sure Millie just gets it out so she can tip it everywhere and see what mess she can create! But I think she really enjoys to create things. She can spend a long time just sitting surrounded by Duplo stacking it all up and then showing it to me as a castle or something else really imaginative. She likes the truck in this set, she puts the man on it and pretends it's Grandad and then uses her imagination to pretend he is going driving to the shops and picks up a dog and some flowers from the set. It's nice to see that she can take something which is quite basic and create different stories with it every time. Because this set fits with all other Duplo it just expands the amount of fun she can have. Our Duplo tub is now overflowing (we have 3 sets) and it means that these blocks compliment the others which gives her even more ability to play and have fun. === Durability === Duplo is definitely durable that's for sure! The first set we bought 4 years ago and it has been chewed on, thrown, even put in the bath and it is in fine condition still, as good as new! Because it's all made from a good quality plastic it's easy to clean, I've just washed it up with soapy water and sometimes Millie does this too just for fun! It helps clean it up and keep it at a good quality. It's definitely something which will last, my Mum says she still has my old Duplo at her house and my nieces play with it! So that shows how durable it is. The actual pictures on this are really quite simple so although they will probably date a little with time they will still be recognisable and that is what matters. === Conclusion === We love Duplo in this house. I thought at 5 years old Millie would be growing out of it but she is still really interested in building with this and using her imagination which is really nice to see. The numbered blocks are really useful in helping to teach about numbers and counting without it being really obvious which may put some children off or intimidate them a bit. We paid £15 for the set which I think is good value for money, often Duplo is over priced in my opinion so when we see it on offer we are tempted to buy some but at full price of £25 I think that that is a bit too much as it's not the biggest set in the world. Having said that it will last a long time and it certainly is entertaining; Millie plays with it on a daily basis. Read the complete review |

Lego 9642 Monster Fighters The Mummy
by louisechackett At Christmas all of my cousins and I do a secret santa where we each buy for one of the others. It has only happened for the past three years but it is something that we all love doing. As my youngest cousin is still only 14 the rest of us throw a couple of pounds in and buy him something but don't expect him to buy something for one ... of us. This year my son questioned why he wasn't in on the secret santa business and so I decided to buy him a little extra present myself to take to my Uncles house on Boxing day which is when we all open our presents. The present I chose for my son was the Lego monster fighters set 9462 and is called the mummy. ==What is it?== The Lego monster fighters range is one of the newest ones that Lego have introduced and as soon as my son saw the range in a toy catalogue it was one of those must have ranges that was soon on his Christmas list. There are quite a few sets in the range but the mummy is one of the smaller and less expensive sets. The set comes in a small thin cardboard box which was actually a little damaged when it was delivered to me. As I had ordered late and the box was only going to be disposed of anyway I didn't bother complaining but I did note the thin box was certainly an inferior quality to those used for the larger expensive sets. On the box there is a picture of the set all set up as well as the Lego and monster fighter's name. We are told that this set is suitable for children aged 7-14 but I think confident builders a bit younger than this would be ok with the set as it is a small one and so not overly complex. The mummy set comes with two mini figures, the mummy's chariot and Ann Lee who is a monster fighter who comes complete with a helicopter. You also get a few smaller accessories including a moon stone which is what the monsters are trying to deliver to Lord Vampyre so he can take over the world! This set will set you back just £7.97 on amazon and has a RRP of £8.99 so there is a small saving to be had. As with most things on amazon it is an idea to keep an eye on the prices as they can sometimes drop quite dramatically. ==Our experience== This was built the day after Boxing Day in the morning virtually as soon as we had got up. My son loves to build Lego both these kinds of sets and just his own inventions as well and so he is always keen to get started with the sets. I knew that as this set was quite a small one he would be more than able to build the set without help from me and so I was able to just sit and watch and wake up a bit! Obviously the box was slightly damaged but my son didn't hesitate in ripping it open anyway and thankfully the pieces inside were all intact as they are contained in a plastic bag. There was only one bag of Lego with this set and my son made full use of the fact that there wasn't much Lego and ignored my usual advice of putting all of the pieces in to colour and shape and such like to make them easier to find. In this case I didn't argue because I could see myself there weren't masses of pieces in the set. As always the instructions were clear and colourful and so really easy to follow for my son. I would say that younger builders may need a little help following the instructions but really they are incredibly clear and I like how they have taught my son to follow simple instructions to be honest. This set didn't take my son long to build, even independently and we were looking at around fifteen to twenty minutes that was all. For a small set and the price paid I wasn't really expecting much more though so it wasn't an issue. What was great was when the set was built my son was able to really play with this small set and integrate it with his other Lego which he loved being able to do! I think my son's favourite element of this set was the fact that you got a glow in the dark skeletal horse which pulled the mummies chariot and he had such fun hiding it under his dressing gown to test it out and then doing the same under my dressing gown so that I could see! What I noticed about this set was that it was made with the same excellent pieces as other Lego products and so it stood out as a sturdy and well made kit. Whilst you do have to take some care when playing with Lego you do know that they aren't going to fall apart at the slightest movement which I think is really important. I think this set is best purchased along side other sets in the monster fighter range personally because whilst you can create little chases between the mummy and Ann Lee I have noticed my son has more fun when he is including the crazy scientist, Lord Vampyre and the other monster fighters in the games he makes up too! As a cheap enough set to go with the more expensive ones in the range this is a really good offering. It is good quality, you get a couple of mini figures and the glow in the dark skeletal horse is a really cool piece even from an adults point of view! Thank you for reading my review! Lego 3221 City: Big Truck
by louisechackett My son is a huge fan of Lego and their products and will happily sit for hours creating his own designs from his massive drawer full of Lego bricks but he also enjoys making the sets that come with something specific for you to build and with this in mind I bought him a few various Lego sets this past Christmas just gone. One of the ... sets I bought for him was the Lego city big truck set which has the set number 3221 should you wish to check it out online. This is my review of the product. ==What is it?== The Lego city set 3221 is called the big truck and is basically a large delivery truck which is used to deliver the Lego around the city! The set comes in a good sized cardboard box which is blue for the most part and which features pictures of the city sky line in the background and so for me was immediately recognisable as a product in the Lego city range. The box features a good large picture of the truck when it is assembled and so you can get a great idea of what it is going to look like before you purchase it but in this case it also features a smaller insert picture which tells us the length of the truck which I think is a good idea because often Lego products look big on the box and then you get them built and they are tiny! It is worth noting this truck measures 39cm and so it is a good sized piece. The box that the set comes in is the usual tough cardboard that larger Lego sets in particular come packed in and I like that they are solid and feel a good quality especially if you are going to be wrapping them up for a present! The box tells us that this particular Lego set is suitable for children aged 5-12 years and I think this is quite a fair assessment though I think those aged five would probably need a good bit of adult support as they built it. My son is seven and managed this set on his own but he is a competent builder with Lego as he seems to spend all his time playing with it! ==Or experience== My son was over the moon to receive this set for Christmas even though it wasn't one he had asked for and he doesn't really have many Lego city items. He loved the look of the big truck from the box and for this reason I do think many young boys would like to receive this set because it does look cool. The big truck has Lego stickers on it and so is basically a Lego delivery truck and so I think it appeals for this reason really and the fact that it is a City product is pretty irrelevant. My son wanted to build this set on Christmas day but actually ended up building it around five days after Christmas because we had things going on some days but he also had other Lego sets he wanted to build and I didn't want him to build them all on the same day and then have nothing left to do! He decided to build it one afternoon and whilst I opened the box for him I was pretty much just left then to watch because he wanted to have a go at this one independently which was fine by me. In the box were two bags of Lego and the instructions manual. The bags were labelled one and two and so it was clear which bag you would need when asked to open it in the instructions. I am quite insistent that when my son builds something with Lego that he makes sure he has a good space to work in and that he separates all of the pieces in to groups of colour and size and what not before he begins just because I think it is a clear and more organised way of working and he is then able to find the pieces he needs according to the instructions with ease. The instruction manual is as ever excellent quality and to me is quite like a glossy magazine! The manual features just nineteen steps in total but many of these are broken down in to simple easy to manage smaller steps and as they are so clear you do feel as though you can allow a confident and competent child to tackle them on their own. I like how my son can use the instructions to check he has got things just right by counting studs on the base or whatever and the clear, large instructions make this really easy for him to do. As my son was building the big truck he was actually quite surprised at just how large it was going to be for a Lego vehicle and I have to say I was quite surprised too. Even though we were told it would be 39cm it was tricky to fully visualise this until the truck had started to be built and I think both my son and I were really impressed by the size of the truck. This set took my son around forty to fifty minutes to complete which I think is a nice amount of time to be sat doing a Lego activity from start to finish. The look of the truck as a whole is actually really good. It is made from mainly bright yellow bricks which really stand out and look bright but which also contrast the red Lego logo on the truck well. The masses of black wheels to make the truck moveable and the little doors on the truck all make this look a realistic and good quality delivery truck. What my son loved about this truck was the fact that there are some really cute little features. Within the passenger section of the truck for example there is a red coffee pot and a bed for one of the delivery men to rest overnight! You get two delivery men with this set which is nice as my son likes to have one of them driving and the other one resting! The top of the passenger section does lift off easily for popping the men in and out in play too. What you also get with this set is a set of nine blue bricks which you stick a sticker to and which end up looking like boxes of Lego themselves for transportation on the truck! The little red trolley that comes with the set is actually functional for adding some of the boxes on to and transporting to the back of the truck where you can store them for their journey and so it makes quite a comprehensive little set to play with. My son has played with this so much since Christmas and integrated it with some of his other sets and so I do think it was a very good purchase. Whilst the set is great for the most part and well made I do have one little qualm and that is simply that where the passenger part of the truck and the large trailer joins it is held with a moveable piece which allows them to turn much like you would expect a real truck to be able to do. Now sometimes as you are playing this comes loose and the passenger part will fall off and need reattaching and whilst this only takes a matter of seconds I do think a larger swivel piece of Lego would have meant that this would happen less regularly. It doesn't seem to affect my sons enjoyment of playing with this truck but it does frustrate me if I have to move it or something! Overall though based on how much my son enjoyed putting this together and the package as a whole I do think that it was a good buy and is great quality. Now I actually purchased this in Smyth's toys before Christmas where it was on offer for just £12.99 instead of the RRP of £29.99 and I thought at that price it was an offer too good to miss for a good sized Lego set. Having looked online though I have struggled to find it for less than £30 and in some cases it is being sold for more than the RRP which I find ridiculous. Should you be able to get this set for around the £15-£20 mark I think you will have got a really good buy and I do recommend this set. Thank you for reading my review! Read the complete review |
