Lego 3860 Heroica: Castle Fortaan
by historywitch I have a daughter who is a huge fan of Lego, fantasy books and board games, so when I came across this game from Lego I bought it straight away for her seventh birthday. It was opened with glee and has been played with everyday since. **Lego Heroica** Lego Heroica is one of Lego's range of games that you build out of the ... humble Lego brick. There are four games in the series, of varying sizes, length of game play and prices. Castle Fortaan is the largest set at RRP £19.99 and 304 Lego pieces (and 10-20 minutes of gameplay). Also in the range are: Waldurk Forest- 225 pieces and £14.99 (10-15 minutes gameplay) Caverns of Nathuz - 217 pieces and £14.99 (10-15 minutes gameplay) Draida Bay- 101 pieces and £9.99 (5-10 minutes gameplay) Each of these games is substantially cheaper on Amazon (i.e. Castle Fortaan was purchased for £15.99). Each game can be played individually, or you can buy two or more sets and join them together to extend the game. Inside the box are lots of very small Lego pieces, a game booklet with the rules, a construction booklet and a couple of suggested game layouts. It took me 20 minutes to put together all the little rooms and pathways; I found it fun but I suspect my daughter would have taken much longer and got bored half way through as there was quite a bit of repetition, especially with the walkways. Once made, you need a flat surface measuring around 30 cms by 40 cms. **Playing the Game** There are a selection of four 'heroes' with this game, each with their own special skill. First you select the one that you want to represent you - I generally get what I am given by my daughter! Then you roll the special dice not just to move through the game, but also to find out if you have defeated a monster, lost health points, won gold, or if you can use your special skill. In addition you can collect gold, keys, potions and 'treasure chests' (all little Lego pieces placed on the game board). Each hero comes with a little stand to place these items on and you can buy weapons with extra skills from the 'store'. All of the rules are pretty simple, but are also laid out in the game book which we keep open to remind ourselves of what each potion/symbol does. The aim of the game or the 'quest' is to get the magic helmet from the golden goblin, so you can choose to search for resources first or go straight on and tackle the goblin first before your rival heroes get there. Anything you 'earn' like weapons etc can be kept on your hero's store for the next game if you wish. Whilst the game comes with several suggested layouts, there is nothing stopping you from coming up with your own combinations, building more walkways and rooms or adding in other potions or items. My daughter had a rummage in her own Lego and came up with several items that she added in and made up rules for herself. This adds a whole new dimension to the game and really encourages imagination. Once a game is finished you can see if you can fit the game back into the box as is, or you can dismantle and set it up again afresh the next time you get it out. We have a plastic food bag that we use to keep all of the pieces together in the box as some of them are very small indeed. At the beginning of each game it can take between 5 and 20 minutes to set up a new layout, depending on whether you use an established one or come up with one of your own. **Conclusion** This is a simple but highly imaginative game that reminds me of the old Dungeons and Dragons game (only much much easier). Despite it being marked for 8 years and above, my seven year old quickly grasped the concept and enjoys playing it hugely. She is learning to plan ahead, to create strategies, to use her imagination and to beat her parents at a game. She is also immersing herself more deeply into the geekier side of life, something which fills me with joy. Out of the four sets this is the best one to start with, not only because it is larger and you have a longer gameplay, but because you have four hero figures to start with and a nice range of goblin enemies. The flexibility of these games is enormous, you can change what you like pretty much and it really is something that can endlessly be updated and refreshed. In addition each different set has different enemies, things to search for and even more variations to add. I cannot recommend this set highly enough, it's the one game I will happily play over and over again with my daughter without getting bored. Read the complete review |

Lego 5765: Transport Truck
by louisechackett For my son's birthday my friend bought him the Lego creator 3 in 1 transport truck set which my son was delighted with as he loves to build with Lego and is really good at it. This is my review of the product. The Lego creator transport truck comes in a tough cardboard box which has large illustrations on both sides showing ... what you are able to make with this set. You are told that the set is a three in one set and so you obviously have three options to what you can make using the pieces included. I like the fact that these are shown in nice colour on the front of the box as it makes it easy for the builder to choose what they want to build. The box tells us that the set is suitable for children aged from 7-12. Inside the box there is the Lego which is packed in to a plastic bag but one which is easily opened and two instruction booklets. In this set you can build the transporter truck with a helicopter, a transporter truck with a small boat or a transporter truck and small car and so each of these options are covered in the instructions. The truck and helicopter uses the most pieces and so this has its own booklet where as the other two are contained in just one book. My son decided to build the transporter truck with helicopter as he thought that looked the coolest! As always I do encourage my son to lay all of the Lego out before he begins building because I think it makes more sense to have the pieces sorted in to colour and shape and such like so that you can easily find them when you need them. My son always moans as he does this but he knows that ultimately it makes the whole process easier for him and as he is seven now he doesn't really like me interfering when he is making his creations and so I am allowed to help sort the pieces but that is as far as it goes! He set about following the instructions for the construction and first had to build the helicopter. I say it every time I do a Lego review but as always I was very impressed at how easy the instructions were for my son to follow. At the end of the day this is a toy which is intended for use by a child and so I do think that the instructions should be simple, step by step and easy to follow and Lego never let me down on this front. My son is able to work out which pieces he needs from looking at the colour and the number of raised dots on a piece for example and is more than able to complete the construction of a set independently. Once he had finished the helicopter he moved on to the transport truck and trailer part and again he was able to do this completely independently. It took my son around an hour to build the complete thing which I think is a reasonable amount of time for a child to spend on an activity such as this. The completed transport truck and helicopter are actually sitting on my TV unit currently as my son likes to leave his Lego on display when he isn't playing with it! I have to say I do think it looks quite nice as the transport truck is predominantly blue and grey with flashes of orange or yellow whilst the helicopter is mainly yellow and black and so compliments it nicely. There is lots of detail on the two creations and it is nice to look at. My son does play with them and sometimes one of the helicopter blades will fall off but this is easily rectified and par for course with a product such as this one I think. I like how you can actually play with Lego creations when they are built providing you are careful and this is often not the case with cheaper imitation products as the bricks don't seem to hold together in the same way as Lego does. At the moment my son is happy with his creation and doesn't want to dismantle it to make one of the other two options available to him. I do like how he is able to re use this set should he want to and make something different and so of course we have kept the two instruction manuals and should he decide to dismantle his truck and helicopter we would be able to store the pieces in a freezer bag with the instruction booklets. The set costs £14.99 currently on amazon and I think that it is a great price for the set as it does have various options for a child to build something and then take it apart and build something else as and when they should wish to. I am sure that the majority of Lego loving little boys would love this set and I would certainly recommend it. Thank you for reading my review! Read the complete review |

Lego 4711: Flying Lesson
by Meggysmum I have two children; a girl and a boy with a three year age difference. This often presented a challenge when looking for things that they could play together but Lego was always one of their favourites. As they became a little older they started to like the Harry Potter books and then the films and they were very keen on the Harry ... Potter Lego sets so we have ended up with quite a collection. The Flying Lesson was a small set that I seem to remember one of the children receiving as a birthday present from a friend. I think it was priced at about £3.50 at the time. It is now classed as a rare set and a new, boxed version is selling on Amazon for £38 and there are sets on eBay for £12 as well as used ones from £2 so the price does seem to vary widely. The set was originally released in 2002 as a tie-in with the release of the film of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. The set contains the mini-figures of Harry Potter in his Gryffindor uniform and Draco Malfoy in his Slytherin attire, both have cloaks. The characters account for 5 pieces each and since the set only contains 24 pieces altogether you can immediately tell that there is not much building involved. Even though these are Lego characters the faces and hair are very good and it is obvious which characters they are! The set represents the part of the film when Madame Hooch has to take Neville Longbottom inside Hogwarts after a flying accident and Draco flies off, taking Neville's Remembrall and Harry gives chase on his broomstick. The main part of the set is a trolley that can hold the broomsticks. This is very easy to build and the instructions are extremely clear and easy to follow. The whole construction of the set is covered in just 6 steps so it is ideal for a child who is just getting to grips with following building instructions. The only problem we have had is that the instructions are just printed on a small, single piece of paper that has not stood the tests of time particularly well and is now probably made up of more sellotape than paper. The majority of the pieces in the set are standard shape Lego bricks in beige, black and grey but obviously the brooms and the Remembrall are special pieces, as are the characters. My children liked this set as it was so easy and quick for them to build and they liked re-enacting the chase between Draco and Malfoy. The characters can't really "sit" on their broomsticks but they can hold them which seemed to be perfectly satisfactory when it came to playing. Being such a small set means we have actually managed not to lose any of the pieces over time and we rebuilt it a couple of days ago which only took about three minutes. The design makes a solid construction once completed. This is a lovely little set and allowed fun in both construction and imaginative play. There are not enough pieces to allow the building of anything except the original design though which is a shame. At a couple of pound it is a fun buy but at £38 someone must need their head looking at! Read the complete review |
