Lego Bricks & More 4626: Farm Brick Box
by claireylulu Lego 4626 Creativity, children using their own imagination and using their hands to make is something I will always encourage my children to do. From the age of one we had mega bloks, then we moved onto Lego Duplo which is where my youngest son aged three and a half is still at but my eldest has moved onto the ... small Lego. He is five years old and for the last year his enthusiasm for Lego has grown and grown. We have slowly added sets to his collection. We do have a couple of the Lego City sets but my son does struggle a little to put them together he is very strong minded and has clear visions of what he wants so prefers to make his own creations up. This particular set Lego 4626 was bought as a gift for him and I would say it is in-between the basic Lego sets and Lego City sets. I would definitely say it's not a set I would start my child off with as it does lack the basic bricks. *****The Lego***** The Lego 4626 comes in a decent sized blue box like many of the Lego sets come in these days. Is it me getting a bit old, I miss the red boxes with the lid shaped like a brick top and the handle that folded down to lock the lid on! The size of this box is ridiculous for the amount of items you actually get. The bricks do come in a few clear plastic bags which you open and then put in the box. Once they have all been tipped into the box it does look a bit pathetic with about an inch and half layer of bricks in a seven inch high box. Never the less my son was still happy to receive some Lego. The set is actually a Farm brick set and comes with a booklet of instructions to show you how to build the farm set. The instructions are very simple and easy to follow even for my five year old. The box contains 232 items and a Lego brick separator. The instructions show you how to build the tractor and the trailer that attaches, a barn shaped archway, the front of a small cottage, a farm worker, a dog and a few other bits. All the blocks are provided to build this. Like I said it is lacking in the basic bricks and does have quite a few very small specific pieces like wheels for the tractor and trailer, a fence piece, door and windows, steering wheel for the tractor and more. The set doesn't come with a base plate but then many sets are not provided with them anymore. The orange Lego brick separator was a bit of a novelty for my son to begin with but after a while he has given up with it and nearly always breaks the bricks up with his hands and if he can't do it that's what mummy's are for! *****Our Thoughts***** On first opening this box my son immediately wanted to build the tractor and trailer. He followed the instructions quite well and only looked for a bit of help with assembling the wheels. He enjoyed finding the pieces he needed and worked well at it for some time. He did go onto build the other items as well but that was the last time he bothered building them. He is a very creative boy for his age and likes to invent his own things. That said he has used his instructions to build the tractor and trailer a few times adapting it slightly for himself. The set is made up of lots of lovely bright colours making some interesting creations. My son has since added this set to his others like I think most do with their Lego. He really likes all the different bits you get with this set and they have enhanced his creations but he has needed more basic bricks to make bigger things. I personally think this set is ideal to add to other Lego sets but does lack a little on its own. I wouldn't recommend it as a first set to introduce your child to Lego one with more basic bricks and maybe a base plate if you can find would be better. But if you're after a set to add a bit more fun to your already existing sets then this is the product. Even though there looks to be a lack of items in the bottom of the box they do provide lots of fun. It's surprising how a set of wheels can make a child smile. My son loves to make vehicles you can make many different styles with this. My youngest son from time to time does play with Lego instead of his Duplo but this set for him it is a little bit too advanced. This particular set is recommended for ages four plus. *****Availability***** Lego is and has been for many years very popular so available for most places. The Lego box 4626 is available on Amazon for £13 which I think for what you get is a fair price. £13 sounds like a bargain for Lego but don't be fooled 232 pieces sounds a lot but really aren't. You get what you pay for here - a fair price I would say. Read the complete review |

Lego Buzz Lightyear Minifigure
by cha97mw I purchased my Buzz figure just before Christmas as a bit of a mistake. I had done a search for lego duplo for my niece as she is a Toy Story nut but as she is only 2, she is too little for some of the figures so I thought some duplo figures might be an acceptable alternative. I have a duplo buzz in a set that I bought my son, and I ... mistakenly thought that this was the same thing, but it is the smaller lego so it was completely unsuitable for my niece due to its small size. However, all was not lost as my two boys are perfectly sized for lego, and they still quite like Toy Story, so it was something nice to slip into a Christmas stocking. The Buzz figure is mainly white with accents of purple, green, grey and red to highlight different parts of the space suit. This figure is marginally shorter than standard lego minifigures, and a good bit shorter than the accompanying Woody the cowboy figure you can also buy. Compared to a standard figure, the legs are the same length, but the body is a bit shorter. You have the same flexibility in movement of the legs and arms you get in lego figures, so Buzz can sit down, or raise his arms up and down. When I was small most lego figures seemed to have yellow hands. Buzz's are white to match the rest of his appearance. The wings and upper part of the space suit come off the figure as one piece. They need to be put on your minifigure before you put on his head. The wings are permanently open and feel quite strong so they shouldn't snap off in normal play. There is a great level of detail on his suit, with different buttons on the control panel being raised and painted in different colours. Once this part is on, there is a bit of wobble to it, but it doesn't come off unless you want it too. Its just a bit bigger than the figure so it is easier to get on and off. There is a lego stud on the back of the suit so you could attach some other piece of lego to it, maybe a hose and pretend you were putting air in his suit, or a little brick and pretend it is a space pack, but it looks fine with nothing on it too. Buzz's head is actually shaped like what you see on a toy. It is not very like Lego in appearance as most lego heads are very flat. Here, the face is raised to show features like his nose and prominent chin, and it looks more like a standard toy rather than a piece of lego. I can't believe how well made it is. The last piece of Buzz is his helmet. This is just a clear plastic section which fits via three small holes onto the top of his space suit. It is only the rear of his helmet, so you can't open and shut the helmet at all. This is the only weak point to the suit. I find that the piece comes off quite easily when being played with, and the kids are always asking me to put it back on. The overall look to this is brilliant because of the level of detail, but I think that this is more of a display piece really than a toy to be constantly playing with. It looks brilliant on display with my children's many other minifigures that they own. Normally, lego figures cost around £2 in the little packets when you buy them in supermarkets. I paid a lot more than this at nearer £7 as it was Buzz. It is now for sale for £8.25 on amazon which is beginning to get into the realms of being overpriced. What you are paying for here is the branding and the fact it is going to be a bit of a niche collectors item to own. Buzz can be played with and won't break up any more than it is meant to do, but the fact his helmet falls off frequently is not that much fun, so it is more for display. My only complaint with this one is that I wish it came with a little display stand like what you get with the minfigures series in the packets. Buzz does stand well on his own on a completely flat surface, but I just think the figures look nicer with a tiny plastic stand to fix them to and it stops them falling over or getting too crowded on a shelf. I really like this Buzz figure, and I think its appeal will last for quite a long time with him having such a unique look. Read the complete review |

Lego Duplo 5497: Play with Numbers
by kat1234 My son received this set of duplo for Christmas - I believe it was bought for around £12 in the Tesco toy sale in the run up to Christmas (currently £25.99 on Amazon). The set is for children from 2 years to 5 years but it contains very similar pieces to my son's other duplo set that is for children from 18 months of age so I had no ... hesitation in letting him have it. My son had loved building with Mega Blocks for month and Duplo seemed a natural progression for him as the blocks were smaller so we were very pleased to receive this. The set contains 58 pieces - which includes blocks as well as fences, window, wagon base, a person and a dog. There are also blocks with numbers 1 - 10 printed on and blocks with different picture printed on. The pictures are of different objects and have a number of those objects (from 1 to 10) on, so these bricks can be matched with the corresponding number. Therefore, not only can the child use these blocks for building but they can also help them to learn counting and their numbers. The blocks themselves are well made and brightly coloured - so very appealing to my son. They clip together well - this requires a little more force than he is used to but he soon got the hang of this and now is able to do this with ease. They are also very durable. He loves the wagon base (he loves anything with wheels!) and loves to build on top of this and then attach the man and push it around the room. My son really loves counting too, so the pictures on the blocks are great for him as we can count them together. He doesn't yet recognise the numerical figures but we match them up together and I have no doubt he will learn from this. As it stands, the colours of the blocks match so the '2' number block is the same colour as the block with the picture of 2 objects on - so we do colour matching (this may lead to a bit of cheating when he is older and we are trying to learn the numbers though!) Inside the box, there is an instruction booklet which contains some really nice ideas of what you can build with the set and games you can play with the numbers - this is really useful. Overall, this is a nice set of duplo. I would say it is better as an additional set rather than a starter set. This goes nicely with our tub set as it gives additional features - another wagon and window as well as new ones such as the dog. If this were the only set you owned, perhaps you would not get so much out of it as you only have a few additional feature - one window and a few flowers. At full price, it is quite expensive for what you get but if you can pick it up at an offer price, it becomes much better value for money. I like that it offers both manipulative and numeracy benefits to my son and he enjoys playing with this too - recommended. Read the complete review |
