Advantages: Sturdy, hard wearing, educational
Disadvantages: A little on the expensive side.
We bought this Lego Duplo Fire truck for our little boy, Oakley, for christmas when he was three. He is absolutley fire engine mad so this was his favourite present and he still plays with it quite a bit now, although he will soon be five and has mastered the more fiddly 'normal' lego.
In all there are 27 pieces to include:
Movable ladder
Fire hydrant
Two firefighters
Winch with a hook
Something which I presume is a water tank
Axes
Hoses
Bricks which resemble fire
The truck which breaks into three parts
Most important - Flashing emergency light with a siren!
As it is Duplo, the parts are largish, the length of the assembled truck is 30cm max and the height of the assembled cab of the truck is 13cm max. All very easy to hold for those little hands. Also all the parts and the bricks fit together well and although they come apart easily, they do not keep falling apart (as I found with Mega Bloks). The plastic is quite hard, but not brittle, this still looks as good as new, although the flexible hoses have a few little teeth marks!
My son very easily learnt how to put this together and it keeps him entertained for hours as he also loves to take things apart! There were no stickers to put on, which for us is great as Oakley likes to pick the stickers off all his toys, it also means that it could be played with as soon as it was opened. We later bought the fire station with his christmas money and it all works together really well. Cleaning is easy, from a gentle wipe over with a cloth to putting in a drawstring bag and popping in the washing machine, I've soaked some of the parts in a bowl of milton for an hour (after my niece was sick on them - sorry!) and they came out perfect.
We paid £17.99 for the fire truck last christmas from Toys R Us and it is the same price there now, although a little bit updated. It is also £17.99 in the Lego shop. At the time, I felt it was expensive for what it was, but it is definitely a quality item and built to last. To add to the set, there is also the fire station (£39.99), fire and rescue helicopter (£9.99) and the fire chief (in his own car - £4.99). These prices are from the Lego shop, we paid actually paid £27.99 for the fire station at Toys R Us.
