Advantages: A great starter lego set
Disadvantages: None really
I love lego, and am not ashamed to say that when my circa 1970 something set was rediscovered at Granny's this weekend I think I played with it at least as much as my children, the mini-kitchen was too much to resist!
When I say I love lego, I would have to qualify it by saying I love sets that allow you to make lots of different things and don't stifle the imagination - I think I have bought one too many Harry Potter set that you make once and then leave gathering dust for my nephew, in my defence at the request of my Sister in Law. This set is not a set that will gather dust - it is a great starter set that will get any young child just starting out on lego off to a great building future!
We bought this set on the second consecutive day of rain on holiday in the middle of rural nowhere in France, (long story - small toy stash- emergency trip to hypermarket) but it is available for £14.99 from Amazon and from the lego shop at a similar price. This set has 300 pieces in all, and has nothing to do with cranes or container ships as per the manufacturer's description on amazon, which is a mystery.
The theme of the set, as its title would suggest is construction, and the accompanying booklet has full instructions for 3 models, the dumpster truck, the bulldozer and the roller. All 3 models can be made at one time with plenty of bits left for your little builders - the child kind and the one little builder figure that comes with the set.
What I like about this set is that it comes with a fair number of wheels (10 in all) and a traction wheel and lots of vehicle bits, such as windscreens and opening doors. These are of great use for making other models.
Importantly the age guide of 4+ is spot on - my daughter needed a little help to work through the 3 models at first but now can make them by herself. Probably this set is designed to appeal to boys, however we have one too many pink toy in our house, and anyway we like this set.
As mentioned earlier there are 300 bricks in all, including the vehicle bits. I don't think it would be useful to list them here, but suffice to say there is a fair range of colour - orange, red, blue, yellow, black, grey and green and that there is a good range of different types of bricks. There are slopey bricks, little tiny bricks and enough included for your child to get the idea of lego.
The play value of this set has been enhanced for us by having a board in addition to these pieces. Over time all the bits have been absorbed into the rather larger collection we are accumulating, however it was a great first set and my daughter still makes the 3 initial models. For the price I think this is a good value set and sure to be loved by any child - highly recommended!

- 22/04/09 you are right about the strange number thing with the wheels - I got out the pamphlet and triple checked - and the reason is that there is the lorry has six, the roller has 4 and the digger has a traction set - phew hope that clears that one up! |

- 22/04/09 Hm... 10 wheels? Last time I looked most cars (even tractors) use four each, and I may be weak in maths but I don't think that 4 goes into 10 evenly. How strange! |
