Advantages: Good Set, Easy to Build

Disadvantages: Expensive

The Lego City Mail Van, set number 7731, is one of my personal favourites from our (yes our) vast Lego collections. The little postbox alone has provided the grandson with ours of hinged fun! He likes sitting there and opening and closing the lid to get the little Lego letters in and out of it.

This set is quite easy to build, with nice clear instructions. Our grandson built this unaided at three years old, but he has a gift for reading and following instructions. Even so, I think the lower end of the age range for this set, five years old, is about right. It took the grandson about twenty minutes to build this, and if I'd have done it I think it would have only taken me five minutes.

Once built up, the set includes a mail van that's got a roof that you can lift off to get the driver in and out, and a little cupboard with opening doors at the back for the little letters to be placed in. There are two letters included with the set. I would have liked a couple more, but as only two fit comfortably in the post box, I can see why there is only two included.

There's also the little postman minifigure and two letters of course. The letters fit in the minifigure's hands, in the post box, or in the back of the van. So there's lots of different things to do with these sets and kids can get quality play value out of this set.

This is a 2008 set, so if you want to buy it you should do so soon before it's retired. It's already disappeared from the official Lego shop. Amazon still have it for £11.99, which I think is a tad high given that I paid £8 for this six months ago, or a few other websites have it for £9.99. I've taken a star off the rating because of the price hike.

Summary: Highly Recommended

This sounds like fun - Lego always seems to come out with something new every so often.
