Advantages: It is simply fantastic

Disadvantages: Hurts to step on

Quite simply, Lego is one of the greatest inventions ever. It combines the freedom of plasticine, but without the mess, and the durability of adamantium. For those who have just arrived from Dimension X, Lego is blocks of plastic which you can connect to make structures and just about anything your mind allows.

Many moons ago, my brother and I were given the first ever Lego castle as a present (at least we think it was), the Yellow Castle. You had to manually build everything from bricks from the walls to the horses. As time progresed, you would buy sets with more pre-built items. Robin Hood's hideout had wall pieces you could connect, not to mention amazing bits of ivy, the Sea Hawk had cannoncs that you could actually fire blocks from and Medieval castles had actual horses you could mount your men on.

Similarly, the men themselves have become more detailed. Pirates have scars and hook hands, Indiana Jones has stubble and Darth Vader has a lightsabre. Simply awesome!

Prices definately seem to have sharply risen since I was a nipper. The Lego shop in Brighton sells the Millenium Falcon for £350!!! It is impossible to justify that sort of money on a child, and even harder to justify for my own front room, so sadly, I remain Falcon-less.

In my opinion, Lego prehaps seems to have too many pre-built parts to it these days. It is understandable why they have done this, especially on the more complicated models, but it definately limits what can be done with them. Part of the magic of Lego as a child was that you could do so much with it. I actually managed to build the 4 x 4 from Tango and Cash, complete with flip out machine gun turret, one weekend and was extremely proud of it. I feel modern Lego points children in a certain direction a bit too much.

The only other downside of Lego is, of course, if you step on it barefoot. Most socks will cushion the blow, but barefoot, it is up there with childbirth (probably worse in fact, those chicks are just exaggerating).

Lego is a simply timeless toy, and great to play with as child, and then as an adult with children. Nothing beats beating a proper scene, with buildings and figures and acting out a little adventure. Buy it, and then buy some more!

Summary: Essential for any child (or adult)

Ahem... I've given birth and stepped on Lego with my bare feet. I can assure you, stepping on Lego is NOTHING as painful as childbirth.

You are so going to cop it for that childbirth line.... :)

I love lego, will be getting some for my toddlers soon! I used to build massive mansions with furniture and everything. Its not what it used to be though. Good review :)
