Lego 4436 City Patrol Car
Advantages: easy for a child to build, lots in the kit
Disadvantages: fiddly to assemble the headlights
I purchased a few of these little lego city sets when I saw a great deal on them for £4 instead of the £9 they normally retail at on amazon. I thought they looked a great size to have in for presents for children's birthday parties, especially when the invitation is given out quite late. My only error was that my son opened the box that they were in, and he immediately assumed it was for him.
As it was only a fairly cheap set, I let my boys aged 4 and 6 have a set to share after a really good week at school. We opened it on the Friday afternoon, and the three of us spent about an hour building up the model between us following the instructions that came with the set.
I felt the concept of this set is really nice. You have a checkpoint which features a little road bump and a barrier which can rotate up or down. This is wide enough that the police vehicle that comes in this set can drive across it with no problems.
You then get a police officer, and a criminal, and there is a little set of handcuffs that fits around the wrists of the lego figures. There is also a small sign showing that this is bear country, so it is not quite the same as the lego city policeman who wear slightly different uniforms to this officer. My children are familiar with the two different types of policeman after having read the lego magazine.
Another nice little touch is that the vehicle is big enough to put both figures inside, though you do have to take the roof off your vehicle in order to do so, which is easy enough for my 6 year old but my 4 year old seems to have heavy hands and it usually results in a bit of reassembly afterwards.
The instruction booklet that came with this set was really clear, and we followed the steps together taking it in turns to fit pieces on. It was divided into instructions for the road block, and some for the car. The car was a bit more fiddly as it involved putting on a couple of pieces for each light on the vehicle, and then smaller bumpers and grills which are quite fiddly to hold, I find, even as an adult.
The resulting set has great play value, particularly if you have other lego city pieces so you have more people. You can build up a little back story about who the robber is escaping from.
My only criticism really is the same one I have for most lego sets - you can only really build one model with it, so there is not much room for the more creative style play, it is more role play once it is built and frustration having to keep rebuilding when it comes apart.
As a little gift, I found it was great value at £4. It is worth the £9 too as you get plenty in it, and it has been very popular with my children, and I gave one to my 7 year old nephew who also loved it.
Summary: An absolute steal for £4. I hope that officer won't come and arrest me.
