Lego 4711: Flying Lesson
Advantages: Quick and easy to build. Good characters
Disadvantages: Not enough bricks to enable different rebuilds.
I have two children; a girl and a boy with a three year age difference. This often presented a challenge when looking for things that they could play together but Lego was always one of their favourites. As they became a little older they started to like the Harry Potter books and then the films and they were very keen on the Harry Potter Lego sets so we have ended up with quite a collection.
The Flying Lesson was a small set that I seem to remember one of the children receiving as a birthday present from a friend. I think it was priced at about £3.50 at the time. It is now classed as a rare set and a new, boxed version is selling on Amazon for £38 and there are sets on eBay for £12 as well as used ones from £2 so the price does seem to vary widely.
The set was originally released in 2002 as a tie-in with the release of the film of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone.
The set contains the mini-figures of Harry Potter in his Gryffindor uniform and Draco Malfoy in his Slytherin attire, both have cloaks. The characters account for 5 pieces each and since the set only contains 24 pieces altogether you can immediately tell that there is not much building involved. Even though these are Lego characters the faces and hair are very good and it is obvious which characters they are!
The set represents the part of the film when Madame Hooch has to take Neville Longbottom inside Hogwarts after a flying accident and Draco flies off, taking Neville's Remembrall and Harry gives chase on his broomstick.
The main part of the set is a trolley that can hold the broomsticks. This is very easy to build and the instructions are extremely clear and easy to follow. The whole construction of the set is covered in just 6 steps so it is ideal for a child who is just getting to grips with following building instructions. The only problem we have had is that the instructions are just printed on a small, single piece of paper that has not stood the tests of time particularly well and is now probably made up of more sellotape than paper.
The majority of the pieces in the set are standard shape Lego bricks in beige, black and grey but obviously the brooms and the Remembrall are special pieces, as are the characters.
My children liked this set as it was so easy and quick for them to build and they liked re-enacting the chase between Draco and Malfoy. The characters can't really "sit" on their broomsticks but they can hold them which seemed to be perfectly satisfactory when it came to playing. Being such a small set means we have actually managed not to lose any of the pieces over time and we rebuilt it a couple of days ago which only took about three minutes. The design makes a solid construction once completed.
This is a lovely little set and allowed fun in both construction and imaginative play. There are not enough pieces to allow the building of anything except the original design though which is a shame. At a couple of pound it is a fun buy but at £38 someone must need their head looking at!
Summary: A cute little set for Lego Harry potter fans.
