At Christmas all of my cousins and I do a secret santa where we each buy for one of the others. It has only happened for the past three years but it is something that we all love doing. As my youngest cousin is still only 14 the rest of us throw a couple of pounds in and buy him something but don't expect him to buy something for one of us. This year my son questioned why he wasn't in on the secret santa business and so I decided to buy him a little extra present myself to take to my Uncles house on Boxing day which is when we all open our presents. The present I chose for my son was the Lego monster fighters set 9462 and is called the mummy.
==What is it?==
The Lego monster fighters range is one of the newest ones that Lego have introduced and as soon as my son saw the range in a toy catalogue it was one of those must have ranges that was soon on his Christmas list. There are quite a few sets in the range but the mummy is one of the smaller and less expensive sets.
The set comes in a small thin cardboard box which was actually a little damaged when it was delivered to me. As I had ordered late and the box was only going to be disposed of anyway I didn't bother complaining but I did note the thin box was certainly an inferior quality to those used for the larger expensive sets. On the box there is a picture of the set all set up as well as the Lego and monster fighter's name. We are told that this set is suitable for children aged 7-14 but I think confident builders a bit younger than this would be ok with the set as it is a small one and so not overly complex.
The mummy set comes with two mini figures, the mummy's chariot and Ann Lee who is a monster fighter who comes complete with a helicopter. You also get a few smaller accessories including a moon stone which is what the monsters are trying to deliver to Lord Vampyre so he can take over the world!
This set will set you back just £7.97 on amazon and has a RRP of £8.99 so there is a small saving to be had. As with most things on amazon it is an idea to keep an eye on the prices as they can sometimes drop quite dramatically.
This was built the day after Boxing Day in the morning virtually as soon as we had got up. My son loves to build Lego both these kinds of sets and just his own inventions as well and so he is always keen to get started with the sets. I knew that as this set was quite a small one he would be more than able to build the set without help from me and so I was able to just sit and watch and wake up a bit!
Obviously the box was slightly damaged but my son didn't hesitate in ripping it open anyway and thankfully the pieces inside were all intact as they are contained in a plastic bag. There was only one bag of Lego with this set and my son made full use of the fact that there wasn't much Lego and ignored my usual advice of putting all of the pieces in to colour and shape and such like to make them easier to find. In this case I didn't argue because I could see myself there weren't masses of pieces in the set.
As always the instructions were clear and colourful and so really easy to follow for my son. I would say that younger builders may need a little help following the instructions but really they are incredibly clear and I like how they have taught my son to follow simple instructions to be honest.
This set didn't take my son long to build, even independently and we were looking at around fifteen to twenty minutes that was all. For a small set and the price paid I wasn't really expecting much more though so it wasn't an issue. What was great was when the set was built my son was able to really play with this small set and integrate it with his other Lego which he loved being able to do!
I think my son's favourite element of this set was the fact that you got a glow in the dark skeletal horse which pulled the mummies chariot and he had such fun hiding it under his dressing gown to test it out and then doing the same under my dressing gown so that I could see! What I noticed about this set was that it was made with the same excellent pieces as other Lego products and so it stood out as a sturdy and well made kit. Whilst you do have to take some care when playing with Lego you do know that they aren't going to fall apart at the slightest movement which I think is really important.
I think this set is best purchased along side other sets in the monster fighter range personally because whilst you can create little chases between the mummy and Ann Lee I have noticed my son has more fun when he is including the crazy scientist, Lord Vampyre and the other monster fighters in the games he makes up too! As a cheap enough set to go with the more expensive ones in the range this is a really good offering. It is good quality, you get a couple of mini figures and the glow in the dark skeletal horse is a really cool piece even from an adults point of view!
