Lego 10558 Duplo Number Train
Advantages: Really bright, a great idea, educational
When Hope was one we bought our first ever set of Duplo and she enjoyed playing with it and so over the last couple of years we have bought several more sets. Now that she has a little brother they play with it more than ever with the pair of them sitting together building all kinds of things and so when our little boy turned two this year (yes two, no idea where the time has gone...) we were really delighted when friends of ours bought him this number train. He has now had it for a month and plays with it, along with Hope, almost every single day. It is a brilliant toy.
Duplo, Duplo, Duplo
Duplo is basically a young person's lego! The pieces in Duplo are much bigger and they tend to be more colourful due to the fact that they are aimed at little ones. I had Duplo when I was little and can remember making houses with it along with my brother. You can buy all different kinds of Duplo now from a pet shop set to a building set and they tend to start from around £8. It is nice to have so much choice although it is also very tempting as I find that I am attracted to it and want to buy it all! Whichever packs you buy they can be used all together which makes it even more fun. Since both of my children enjoy playing with it I am really pleased that we bought it for them.
When my little one opened this as soon as he saw it he announced "choochoo!" at the moment he is train mad so this gift is absolutely perfect for him! He couldn't wait to get it open so he could start playing with it right away and to be honest- neither could I as it just looks so inviting on the box! Inside there were about 4 plastic bags with various blocks and things inside. This was all, no huge amounts of excessive packaging that would take forever to open. I opened all the bags for him and he dived in.
Now at first when you open it none of the pieces are joined so it didn't look like a train, he was a little confused but I soon fitted pieces together so it was a train, this only took a minute and if you are unsure there is a diagram on the back of the box to follow. That is the joy of Duplo- everything is basic so the wheels of the train don't look like a train until you add to it with your funnel and the engine compartment but you could also choose to add different things to these wheels to make it a truck or a car or something using your other packs so it is really down to your imagination what you make of it.
The train is great, it has the front compartment and then four carriages. The carriages can carry the number blocks. These are from 1-9 and the colour background they are on are in an order such as red, orange and yellow so it gradually works down the colour spectrum. Of course your train doesn't have to carry the number blocks, they could carry the builder that comes with it or the dog... it is up to you! Or you could use the number block '10' which is shown in the pictures as being a part of a tree...
Watching my little people play
Within this pack you get enough to have a good play with it, you don't need to have lots of other Duplo, or any other Duplo at all. When we first opened it we just played with this pack so that we could see exactly what we got. We made the train and also a tunnel for the train to go through, it was a tight squeeze and sometimes the tunnel would fall over but that was part of the fun! My children both loved it! Now, however, it is mixed in with the other Duplo sets. Now that it is mixed in I find that they don't often make this into a train but tend to use the wheels separately, they will just sit a cat or another character on it and push it along, or they will chase each other with it having a race. I sometimes wonder if this is because they have forgotten it makes a train or if it's just because they like to play with it in a simple fashion.
When they play with this is keeps them very quiet! They have the Duplo in front of them and make a whole host of things. At the moment their favourite thing to do is make a tower block as tall as possible and then it is usually the case of the wheel parts to be driven into the tower to knock it down! What is great is that the numbers included in this set are really helping Hope. She has struggled with recognising numbers but now she is really up to scratch and will pass me whichever number I ask for. I also am teaching her how putting two numbers together creates another- like 3 and 1 together is 31 and this is helping to introduce to her larger numbers.
What is great
What is great about this set is how appealing it is. I must admit that as soon as it was opened I really wanted to get down and play with them. It was fun to put it all together with the little ones and to see what they made of it. It is brilliant because it is very, very easy to use and it appeals to both my 2 year old and my nearly 5 year old and not many toys manage to do that! They will quite happily play with this for a hour or so and in the morning it is the first toy they reach for. It is bright and colourful which I think is a huge part of the appeal, you don't just get all the same shade but a huge variety of different colours of blocks, cars and so forth. The different colours mean you can introduce to children new colours and how there are different shades such as the light blue, mid blue and dark blue number blocks. The number blocks are also great because they help to teach children. My favourite thing about this set is that it helps to encourage children to concentrate, often my little boy likes to be racing around but when he is playing with this he sits still and really focusses on what he is doing which is a big change so it's lovely to see him like this.
Who is it for?
This set is for both girls and boys, I find most Duplo is unisex which is great for us seeing as we have one of each. It says suitable from 2 until 5 although we introduced Duplo for the first time to our little ones at about 1 but we made sure we stayed in the same room at the same time so that any little pieces couldn't be put in the mouth. I do think the age range of 2-5 is a good one though. It's also good if you are hoping to introduce numbers to your little ones or if your little one is into trains just like mine is!
I am not at all disappointed by this. When I helped our little one open it I was really pleased and now that we have had it a month I am still really pleased as it's just as good I was expecting. It is really easy to play with, I don't need to sit and monitor how they play or help them, they are capable of putting pieces together themselves and creating things using their imaginations without input. It is nice to see them playing independently I think this is really important as is getting creative and they can certainly get creative with this! It is bright and colourful making it really appealing and attractive. The quality is great, it's made from robust plastic that can easily be cleaned so no matter how sticky their fingers when playing with this I can always wipe it down afterwards using a wipe and it's as good as new again! The numbers on the train don't scratch off, it's all slightly shiny which provides more protection. These have been thrown around, knocked down from a great height and even had a bit of a gnaw on and so far they haven't come to any harm at all so I suspect we will have these for a long time! It is really nice to see both my little girl and little boy playing with this together, not many toys appeal to them both but this certainly does. I have always really liked Duplo and this is my favourite set so far, it's amazing how all the pieces look fine on their own and can be played with separately but if you put them together in a certain way it will make such a good train! I have seen it recently for £12 and I think that is a fine price to pay for something which is so much fun and is likely to be played with for a long time.
