Advantages: Book and bricks to build with
My son received this book and Duplo set for his first birthday and I think it was the perfect present as its just right for his age in my opinion, there is something to read and more importantly there is something to build which is one of his favourite things to do.
So, what exactly is it? Well the set contains a hardbound book and 15 duplo bricks and as you read the book about the farm animals it tells you how to put the bricks together to make your very own farm animals. I love that they have combined reading with play and its a great way of teaching without kids being aware that they are actually doing something educational as well as fun.
According to an article I read, Duplo (trademarked as DUPLO) is a product range of the construction toy Lego, designed for children aged 1½ to 5 years old. Duplo bricks are twice the length, height and width of traditional Lego bricks, making them easier to handle and less likely to be swallowed by younger children. Despite their size, they are still compatible with traditional Lego bricks. Initially launched in 1969, the Duplo range has gone on to include sets with figures, cars, houses and trains."
First of all, if you read this just as a book I think its a very interesting read for a young child as it explains all about a busy day on a farm and what a farmer has to do and all about his animals. The pictures are bright and bold and colourful and there is just enough text on each page to keep a child interested. The text is bold and easy to read and what I also like is there are animals sounds written on the book as well so you can mimmick each animal and teach them to your child. We read about a rooster, pigs, sheep, and cows. Then on the right hand side of each page there is a picture of the bricks you need to make each animal and how to put them together. Each animal is only three of four pieces (except the rooster which has 5 pieces) and is easy and simple to put together. I would say that at this point in time my one year old cannot put them together so I have to do it but he enjoys playing with them and taking them apart once I have finished them. They look quite realistic and its amazing to see how only three bricks can actually make a realistic looking animal. Of course, there are a few bricks with eyes on which make it a bit more realistic but still, I find it very clever.
The Duplo bricks are well made and sturdy and I have no fears that my little boy could swallow them. If you want to see a photo I have a lovely shot of the pig and the cow that I made. A lovely little book and a great way of encouraging reading and play.
