Lego Woody Minifigure
Advantages: great attention to detail, not too fragile to play with
Disadvantages: the rising cost for this item
Just before Christmas last year I was looking around for presents for various children in my life. I wanted to buy some Toy Story Duplo for my two year old niece as I know she is a huge Toy Story fan like her older cousins, my sons. I saw this Woody figure on amazon, and a Buzz one. From the picture, I wasn't clear if it was duplo or the smaller mini-figure size, so I took a gamble on it thinking if it wouldn't suit my niece, my own children could have it. Much to my childrens luck, both figures did end up being the smaller lego that is more suitable to children who are at least 3 plus due to the small size.
The figures are a bit more expensive than other lego minifigures. You can buy one in a blind bag for about £2, so I was happy paying a little more. This one cost me £5.99. This is probably the maximum I would be willing to pay myself. Now it is a little more expensive at £6.49. This is really a collectors item and the price of it is only likely to go up as Toy Story is less popular now than it was when my boys were toddlers and harder to get hold of some of the toys we have come across.
This Woody figure is a little taller than the Buzz figure, but the same size approximately as other lego minifigures. Slightly bigger because the head is a larger shape. The figure is buildable - you can take the figure apart by removing the head, the hands, and the body from the waist. What I like about the Woody figure is that the cowboy hat is firmly stuck at a jaunty angle on his head. I think this is genius - my youngest son likes to totally pull figures apart, so I have no doubt that the hat would go missing if it weren't so firmly stuck on.
The attention to detail on this figure is pretty amazing. The main part of his body is similar to any lego figure. The lower half of the body shows shaping on the legs in brown to represent cowboy boots. The upper half of the body is great as it has details of a belt, a check shirt, a cowboy print waistcoat, and a sherriff badge. If you look on the back of the waistcoat, there is detailing meant to be the pullstring that Woody is famous for having. The only way this could look better is if there were more stitching details on the boots and the check shirt pattern continued down the arms on the figure.
The figure has skin coloured face and hands making it different to the yellow features we normally see with lego mini-figures. The hands are the traditional C shape so you can use your figure with other lego accessories that you own.
The thing that really screams quality on this figure is the moulding to the head. Instead of having a flat face like the every day figures, Woody has a moulded face which is 3D. The nose and ears jut out. There are painted eyes, eyebrows and mouth, and to me, the face looks identical to the face I see on larger moulded toys, and also within books and the films. I find it amazing whenever I look at the face to see such detail on this miniature scale.
This figure may have been pricey, but I am really glad I got it. My sons really appreciate playing with their favourite characters in a different context. The Woody figure is actually something you can play with. I find more so than the Buzz figure as his helmet falls off far too easily with normal touch.
I think this is perfect for a collector, but I also think that lego should be played with, and I am happy that my sons can enjoy this item as it is hard wearing and will not chip or look less the part from them doing so, as long as we don't lose the parts.
Good things can come in very small lego packages.
