Advantages: Great for Lego seperation and storage

Disadvantages: Not very Lego looking, only holds 1000 pieces and current prices vastly overpriced

Being the beacon of moral fortitude and decency that I am, 3 years ago two of my very good friends saw fit to make me Godfather to their new born son Noah...... said with bias, undoubtedly the cutest kid in the world.
The duties of the Godfather have been varied for me...from babysitting and managing to cover myself, Noah and the walls with the contents of his nappy (its been a learning curve ok!) to buying all the cool presents that I would still like to secretly play with but society dictates that I cant and have to act my age of 33..... boo society.

Now that Noah is old enough to know better not to put all the pieces of esophagus-blocking bits of Lego into his mouth, I have been lavishing Lego upon his grateful little self at every opportunity. He absolutely loves the little plastic bricks and spends as much time as his parents will allow immersed in the brightly coloured bricks of all shapes and sizes. Up and till recently the Lego was stored all mixed up in a large plastic container...that was until I stumbled across The Lego Storage Tray Unit for a bargain 10.49 from the Lego website www.lego.com.
Every fan of Lego should check the website out and they constantly have special offers. This unit normally retails for £40 - 50

What is it?

The Lego Storage Tray Unit is a wooden unit comprising four plastic trays with different sized compartments designed to house the different sized and coloured lego bricks. The storage unit measures 35cm wide by 35cm tall and 30cm deep or 14 inches 14inches and 12inches for those still on the old money. It is self assembly, holds about 1000 pieces in total and does not come with any bricks supplied.

Assembly

DIY or similar related making/building skills are not my strongest point. All my woodwork projects at school ending up being doorstops or paperweights, but even I managed this in 10 minutes. Reinforced with some industrial strength glue it even took my weight when sat on.

Advantages

The whole unit allows easy compartmentalising of the Lego. Noah enjoyed the sorting out the different colours and shapes and his parents are enjoying the ability to walk around bare feet again. The unit is easy to carry and transport and the wooden frame gives it good sturdiness. The grey trays slide in and out easily and there is plenty of space for up to a thousand pieces...size permitting. Most importantly it seemed to enhance Noah's enjoyment of Lego.

Disadvantages

I was hugely disappointed by the appearance of the box. There was nothing to identify it as a Lego product. Only the garish red gave it any feeling of being a Lego product. There was no markings, no pictures, no stickers..nada. I would have preferred it to be shaped like a Lego, styled like a lego anything to make it a bit more Lego. For those with large collections 1000+..Firstly I'm very jealous and secondly one unit will not be enough, but you would be able to stack the units if needed. The main disadvantage and what prevented me from purchasing this before is the price. Never in a million years of overpriced toys (tracey island anyone?) is this worth 40 pounds of anyone's money. Gravely overpriced for what you get. The plastic trays are a little flimsy too and it probably wouldn't take much (i.e. a 3 year old boy) to break or bend them.

Overall

For just over a tenner this is a great little item. It makes Lego play, clear up and storage easier, and Noah loves it. For larger collections this alone may not be enough and the product itself could be improved appearance wise as it does not feel a Lego product at all. I would not say that this is worth the current advertised prices, but for the £10.49 I paid for it, Noah and I are very happy.

Thanks for reading

I use to use a big tray for mine when I was a kid and then drop it all into a big cardboard box!

What a fantastic idea. I'll be asking for one of these at school for wet playtimes. Great review and well worthy of a crown.

I don't know how many pieces of lego i've stood on in the past. This is a great idea, thanks for the review.
