I really like Balance Me products but generally speaking they are just too expensive for me to buy so I was really delighted when I got one free from a Glamour magazine a while bag. I’ve actually used up the one I got free and now I’m onto my second full sized tube.
Before I received this lip balm I’d actually read a lot about it and how good it’s meant to be. Apparently, the tiny 15ml full size tube would normally sell at £8. I think that’s a crazy amount of money for a lip salve but as it was free I wasn’t complaining.
This lip balms not only hydrates and moisturises my lips but it actually plumps them out too and makes them look much fuller and sexier. The salve comes in a small white tube and it’s suitable for all skin types. It’s a slight yellow / off white colour and contains no petroleum at all.
The salve has a delicate rose fragrance and this really lasts for ages and doesn’t wear off once it’s applied to your lips. It adds shine and when I have it on (either on its own or on top of lipstick) I can really feel it hydrating and moisturising my lips.
The tiny tubes last for ages because you only need to apply the smallest amount. It doesn’t wear off as quickly as other lip salves or lip balms I’ve used so reapplication isn’t really a problem.
I’ll have to save up if I want to buy another one after I’ve used this one up too but I feel it’s definitely worth it now I’ve been using it a while. It’s superior in so many ways to the cheaper lip salves I’ve used in the past and I really recommend it.
I feel that I should share my opinion of this product as I felt so let down with it - I was just so glad that I received it has a free sample instead of parting cash for it as I would have been bitterly disappointed. In fact, left with a bitter taste in my mouth - literally. I have just looked for it's normal price and my eyes nearly popped out when I saw it was £12 per 10ml tube although there are only very limited stockists, the balance me website in fact being the only one I could see.
The balance me rose otto lip salve was received last year with a magazine I subscribe to and obviously, I was willing to give it a try. As the winter months approached, my lips were starting to do their usual thing, getting chapped, sore and red and so I knew it would come in handy. I immediately took a dislike to it - I tried it a few times as it was sometimes the only lip salve that I had close by to apply but every time I hated using it.
The lip salve comes in a white tube with a screw lid at the bottom on which it stands. It is wedge shaped at the tip to help with application which is quite handy. The tube is slim which is good for anyone who wants to take it out with them - I on the other hand didn't because of my dislike to it. The lip salve claims to plump, smooth and hydrate your lips - I agree that it does smooth and hydrate them well, so it's purpose as a lip salve is very good. I can't really make many comments on the plumpness of my lips because this wasn't the reason I started to use the lip salve, but I have to say I didn't notice any major difference in the mirror in the few times that I used it. The lip salve is quite good in the fact that it's not sticky whatsoever and doesn't sit on the lips, you can feel it soaking in straight away and it moisturises them very well. Another good point is that it states that it is '100% natural origin', although this is stated on the tube, it doesn't go into any further detail. It also states that it is suitable for all skin types (just not all noses)
Its use as a lip salve are all well and good, but in my view they really need to look at it's scent or should I say smell because that's what it was - it absolutely stinks. I was put off by the most utterly pungent smell. Why it has to have such a 'unique' smell I have no idea. As it is a lip salve, I also found that it tasted as bad as it smelled whenever I caught it with my tongue by accident. It is inevitable that you'll end up tasting it though as it is applied so close to your mouth so why they've made it so unappealing I'm not sure. Even if you don't touch it with your tongue, the taste seems to take over your mouth eventually and gets to the back of your throat making it very uncomfortable to use. What makes me laugh a little is that the lip salve says on the back it leaves lips 'kiss-ably' soft - I don't think anyone would want to go kissing lips with this pungent smell lingering about, I certainly wouldn't anyway. I suppose the scent of something can be personal though - my nose is not impressed at all, but others may think it's scent is lovely.
It smells similar to cough remedies to me and obviously those aren't something that I wish to smell of on a daily basis. It's main ingredients are rosehip oil and shea butter and I think it's the rosehip that is coming through so strong. It's weird because I reviewed an Elizabeth Arden skin protector a couple of weeks ago and it does have a similar smell to that and again, that is something that I've also been put off using partly because of the smell.
It's a shame, because the lip salve's actual moisturising properties work well and I found that if I applied it overnight, my lips did seem a lot smoother and not as red as they did before. I have to rate it 1 star as apart from it's quality of hydrating lips and keeping them moisturised, I have nothing good to say about it as I can't continue using it with that lingering smell, I'm so glad I didn't spend any money on it.
Thanks for reading :o)
I received this lip salve free in this months Glamour magazine and I'm really glad I did as I'm a big fan of the Balance Me products and I always love a new lip product.
Balance Me is a natural beauty range with 100% natural origin which was created six years ago by sisters Rebecca and Clare Hopkins and aromatherapist Sian Jones.
This lip balm is designed to plump, smooth and hydrate and according to the back of the tube, "our petroleum-free, ultra moisturising intensive lip salve is a daily beauty must to plump, protect and smooth away dry patches to leave lips kiss-ably soft."
As this is a trial size the tube contains only 10ml but that is enough in my opinion because a little of this goes a long way. I really like this lip salve but I think one word of warning is needed before you purchase it. You really need to like the rose smell and fragrance because it's very strong in this lip salve and you can taste it when you have it on your lips. You can also smell it under your nose as well and even when you have wiped the lip salve off or it's come off during eating, kissing etc the rose fragrance still lingers so you definitely need to like this smell. If you do like it it's such a wonderful all natural smelling aroma and one that you will like.
This lip salve sones in a little plastic squeezable tube and has a screw top lid which then reveals a plastic applicator tip on the tube. This tip is slanted so it enables you to put it on your lips easily. You only need a little squeeze and this salve goes on really smooth and sticks to your lips. The salve has a slight yellow colour to it and looks a bit like Vaseline although we know from the back of the tube that this contains no petroleum.
The salve is thick and really sticks to my lips but is not sticky or greasy in any way. This salve contains no colour but it does make my lips go a nice pink colour and adds quite a bit of shine to them which I wasn't expecting. After use my lips feel nice and moisturised so I would recommend this as a nice lip salve.
As a bit of a self-confessed lip gloss addict, when I saw this lip salve on the front of a magazine recently I just had to pick it up. Anyone else a sucker for a mag freebie?
I have never heard of Balance Me before, but a quick look at their website tells me that it is a British company that produces aromatherapy based beauty products, using their own blends of essential oils. As well as online, you can buy the products in certain John Lewis and Waitrose outlets and some high street stores - particularly health food shops and shops specialising in natural products. This lip salve comes in a 15ml tube and retails at £8.
I really love the packaging of this product. It's in a squeezy tube with a slanty applicator - nothing special there - but the tube is a lovely dusky pink colour with white writing, making it really attractive and different to other products I've seen. It's a good size and a quick look at the back tells me the company uses 100% natural ingredients.
The first thing you notice on opening the tube is the smell, which is definitely rose - no other smell is discernible. On the first squeeze, the salve came out really watery - perhaps this is a bi-product of the ingredients being all natural, but I gave the tube a bit of a squash and this seemed to solve the problem. The salve isn't as smooth or glossy or others - it has a quite thin consistency, and it does taste strongly of rose, which I wasn't too keen on. The salve leaves a very slight sheen to the lips, but it isn't at all glossy - may be a good or bad thing depending what you're after.
But worst of all for me was that it has no staying power at all, and really didn't moisturise my lips. I reckon the salve stayed on my lips for about five minutes, and it was ineffective as both a gloss or a salve/balm. So, overall, really disappointing and I'm very glad I didn't spend £8 on this.
