Advantages: Soothes quickly, nice tingle, I love the smell
Disadvantages: Smell might not suit everyone, you could get addicted, some drying ingredients
So my hunt for the perfect lip balm continues, and two more products tried this weekend, I think I've found a winner!
My lips were seriously sore on Monday. Despite having a LOT of lip products already, nothing was working, so I needed to pick up some Blistex to do some serious repair work. For me, nothing beats the old school Blistex in a tube, but ended up with the next best thing, a tub of Blistex MedPlus.
Whatever it was, I didn't care, I needed healing, my lips were really chapped! (God I feel like Napolean Dynamite about now...)
This little tub of MedPlus (slightly different wording to the picture above but otherwise the same design) only cost about £2, which is pretty good although it's quite small (7ml). I bought mine at Sainsbury's and this was the only Blistex product available, but there's a huge range if you go to a bigger chemist.
I desperately ripped open the tub and dabbed some on my lips, and there was that tingle you get when you know a lip product is really doing something (be that heal or irritate!). Personally I really like that feeling, and this product seemed to tingle for ages!
The smell is slightly medicated, but sweet. To me it totally reminds me of root beer, which is actually one of my all-time favourite things and I have purposefully bought lip balms flavoured like root beer in the past, so I was really happy! I realise that is a totally acquired taste, but it's not particularly strong so I can't see it being totally offensive to anyone. Despite being scented, there is no taste at all, good or bad, which I like because it discourages me from licking my lips. I also like that because I hate drinking from a water bottle which tastes of lip balm...
The texture is waxy but quite soft even in this weather and always easy to apply. On the lips it doesn't feel greasy at all, you can tell it's there but even when eating or drinking it doesn't "get in the way", feel slimy or uncomfortable, or even seem to wear off. You don't need too much but because of the consistency and size of the pot it probably wont last as long as a more solid wax type of balm.
So did it work? Yes! My lips felt instantly better and by the next day they were soft. I'm still applying it quite a bit, which might not be the greatest idea..read on..
I've used lots of balms that make my lips sore as soon as I stop using them and for the purposes of this review decided to find out why that is. It would appear that the ingredients which cause that nice tingle (menthol and camphor for instance..both in this balm), are good for healing cold sores but actually end up causing dryness because they are so harsh. Which leads to reapplying. That and the fact that it ends up as a habit, I can definitely see why some people claim to be addicted. I sit here with a pot on my desk and find myself putting it on without even knowing why, or particularly needing it...I think I have a problem!
Anyway, back onto the product and the good news is that at least it also contains some pretty good moisturisers, including cocoa butter. So, if the menthol is healing and drying, I guess it is going towards rehydrating.
I'm no scientist, this feels really good on my lips and made them feel better so I will recommend it. But don't blame me if you end up shamelessly addicted to lip balm in a gutter somewhere trying to scrape together your last few pennies for a fix...okay?
Summary: A nice balm for really chapped lips, try something less harsh for everyday use.
