Boots Essentials Lip Salve Original
Advantages: Easily applied, protects and soothes lips, great price.
Disadvantages: A higher SPF would be even better.
For a long time I have been struggling to find just the right lip salve or balm. I tried Morrisons' own brand and found that the texture of the stick was too sticky if you see what I mean and it dragged the surface of my lips whilst applying it. Next I tried an own brand by a good quality supermarket here in Spain. This chain of supermarkets is called Mercadona and I can thoroughly recommend them if you are on holiday in Spain. Their lip salve came in a little cute tin like the Vaseline lip salves and although it was easy to apply and had a lovely scent I found that I was hesitant to use it when I knew that my hands were not clean. I also needed a product that contained sun protection as I am outside a great deal and tend to forget to protect my lips. So as you can see I was struggling and at the start of Winter my lips were getting really sore and then kept nibbling them because they were sore, I even resorted to Sudocrem which with it's white colour made me look quite odd!
Then help came along in the shape of Boots Essential Lip slave Original SPF 15. I actually bought this in the Boots in Luton Airpot departure lounge on my way back to Spain and I have found it to be very effective and also good value.
No more nibbling!
The packaging is very simple consisting of a pale blue plastic lipstick container which pulls off to reveal the salve housed in a white cylinder. When I bought the stick it had a transparent tamper proof seal between the body of the salve and the top which was easy to break which I did immediately to try it! To access the salve simple twist the base of the white cylinder clockwise and the salve will slide up to enable you to use it on your poor little kisser. The Boots logo appears on the blue housing along with the word "essentials lipsalve original SPF 15. Protects and nourishes the lips, dermatologically tested." There are no instructions for use but I think we might manage without them in this case!. The list of ingredients also appears in teeny, tiny letters but I can see that it does contain some goodies like apricot kernel oil, soy bean oil, aloe vera leaf extract and chamomile flower extract. Also strangely enough it is made in Thailand.
The salve is white with a waxy sheen and slides up easily with a quick twist of the base. It has a very faint scent, a little bit fruity but I think this would be suitable for all without offending any one's nose buds. The slightly rounded end of the salve slides gently over your lips and if they are sore , like mine were, it instantly makes them feel better. It does leave your lips feeling a little bit sticky but only the tiniest bit. It only leaves a little sheen on your lips which slowly fades away. The blue housing clicks back into place firmly and the salve has not come apart even after some serious searching for things in my handbag. During the first few days I used it maybe four or five times a day until my lips recovered and now I will use it just before going out in the morning and again in the afternoon before walking the dog. It is small enough, 6.50cms, to slip into my pocket and generally lives in my handbag.
It does a good job, it slides on easily and has no taste at all which suits me. If it had a lovely flavour I would be licking it off all the time! The SPF factor could be a little stronger but overall with six weeks of continual use I am really pleased with it and I will continue to use it maybe looking for a stronger SPF for the Summer (remember the summer?) . I have hardly made any impression on the amount of stick left so at 1.00pound which is the price I paid for it, it appears to be very good value.
5 stars from me, a good basic product which is just what I wanted.
Thanks for reading my review which may also appear on Ciao under splishsplash.
