I was sent this pot of Calvin Klein lip gloss in a beauty haul swap recently - all brand new items sent to each other via a facebook beauty group.
My first impressions were that the packaging looked nice and it was a good little pot but inside the colour was a little dark for me and I could see it was sparkly, in addition it was called Sparkle (the colour) and a sort of raspberry colour.
I don't associate Calvin Klein with skincare or cosmetics so I really feel like they have just branded their name on to someone else's product. Suspicion leads here!
Since receiving this I looked the product up online and it seems it is liked well enough but you'd be a fool to pay a lot for the name. Fragrance Direct sell the pots for as little as £1.99 which tells me all I need to know about this product.
I am not a big fan of sticking my finger in to pots to use products as I just think of the germs breeding and also, I don't really want to cover my finger with a sparkly raspberry lip gloss as I know I will have to wipe it all off afterwards so I used a cotton bud to try it and this also wastes a lot of the product in the process as you end up throwing away most of it.
In conclusion I was not mega impressed with this product and will not be buying further pots of it but it was nice enough to try out.
***Why I want the product?***
I have never tried a Calvin Klein product before and when I saw Ultimate Edge Gloss on a makeup website that I regularly purchase from at such a reasonable price I could not resist. I had eleven shades to choose from that ranged from a bright fuchsia all the way to bubblegum pink. Out of the shade range I chose a shade called Pink Sheen, which seemed to be in the middle range of the pinks available. Pink Sheen on the website looked a beautiful middle toned pink that does not look too in your face but one I could wear every day, with any clothing and with any makeup look.
***About the product***
Ultimate Edge Gloss is described as a none sticky lip gloss that adds weightless shine to the lips, there is also a hint of flavour infused in each shade for a feeling of luxury. This Ultimate Gloss will help to hydrate your lips while providing you with a beautiful sheer dewy and shimmering wash of colour and gloss. Perfect for any occasion.
***Who is Calvin Klein?***
Calvin Klein began by setting up his own coat shop in New York City in 1968. His portfolio later expanded to include Calvin Klein fragrances, cosmetics and branded fashion clothing. Calvin Kleins successful fragrance and underwear range saved the company from bankruptcy in the early 90s. Calvin Klein has become renowned for its growing perfume collection, and Fragrance Direct customers love Calvin Klein fragrances such as Beauty, Eternity and CK One.
When I received the Ultimate Edge Lip Gloss it did not arrive in any cardboard box that you would expect from a brand designer, but just the container itself. (I later realised this product has been discontinued but can easily be purchased of the Internet). Each Ultimate Edge Gloss shade can be seen on the screw off lid so the colour is easy to recognise. The shiny top of the lid says ck Calvin Klein in white writing, while the see through underside lets you see the product inside and the bottom states what the product is called, shade, product weight and that the expiry is 24 months of opening. The round container contains 3.1g of product.
***What does the product look and feel like?***
Opening the lid you can smell the fragrance or hint of flavour as Calvin Klein likes to call it, as I would call this a high end product from a designer the scent seemed very gimmicky to me and made it seem cheap. Pink Sheen's scent is a very fruity, sweet and an almost sickly scent but does actually smell yummy at the same time.
The product itself looks the beautiful pink that I saw on the website and very happy with my purchase, trying to take a small amount of product is more difficult than I thought it would be due to the pot being so small, but applying the product to the back of my hand I am surprised at how sheer this lip gloss actually is. Its sheer pink that looks lighter out of the pot, feels creamy and looks shiny on the skin. I can also see slight shimmer with glitter particles that are very delicate with a gold hue.
My natural lip colour is medium pink/red, when I rub them for exfoliation etc they can seem much pinker going onto the red side. Applying the product to my lips with a lip brush as I found this to be the easiest way to transfer product from pot to lips feels so smooth, creamy and very hydrating. The first coat of product is very sheer but this can be built up until your desired colour is achieved. The shine is also beautiful, which looks more sophisticated than teenager gloopy gloss.
The colour Pink Sheen when built up is a gorgeous pale pink that does not look tacky or like it belongs to your teenager. There are not many pink lip products that an adult woman can wear without it looking awful on them on a vain attempt to hang onto their youth; this is not one of them products.
I have also worn a different coloured lipstick underneath, blotted and applied Ultimate Edge Lip Gloss over the top for a brand new look that is beautiful as it does not alter the product colour underneath but provides a beautiful wash of colour and sheen without applying a clear gloss.
***How does this product wear over the day?***
Applying the product because it is such a sheer wash of colour and almost weightless on the lips, transfer is apparent with eating and drinking. However, if you are just talking for me this product lasted around a good hour if not longer. I also found using a primer underneath greatly gives you extra wear and applying a lipstick sealer over the top, which normally I would not recommend due to the sealer making the gloss matte and gloopy. This does not happen with Ultimate Edge Lip Gloss, although a tiny amount of the gloss is lost more gloss can be applied over the top for longer wear. The shimmer is hardly noticeable while the gold hue gives it an extra dimensional affect, which can be seen in sunlight.
With regards to the sickly sent, thankfully the scent once applied to the lips is undetectable by me or my husband
***Price and availability***
I purchased this product from fragrancedirect.co.uk for a purse busting £1.99, I think is brilliantly priced, the price before the discount is £12.51, which I think is too expensive and would not purchase.
***What I think about it/do I like it?***
For the price I did not expect much from it as I was only initially going on the Calvin Klein name and brand for it to be any good but I am surprised at how moisturising it actually is on my lips and I have constant dry lips to, which most products make this issue worse for me. I think the colour is absolutely beautiful and perfect with any type of makeup, whether a natural look or a more evening look this lip gloss has the ability to complement it all while keeping the classy edge.
The pale pink colour does not wash my pale skin out but instead gives my complexion a lift.
I have had my product now for five months and with me only using my lip brush to apply the product I have made a slight dip, excellent value for money that will see me having this product a while before I need to repurchase, along with new colours.
